Hi,
Wjilst filling up at BP yesterday I noticed that they had a rather expensive price on one of the pumps. I think it was £1.01 per litre for BP Ultimate diesel.
I have always used normal BP diesel at 94p per litre.
Question is has anyone used this diesel?
Is it any good?
Does it justify the extra cost of 8 pence per litre?
|
If you put 'BP' and 'Ultimate' into Forum Search, you'll find plenty of comments and experiences on the various premium fuels. I've tried it a couple of times, but not the consistent 4-5 tankfuls that are supposed to make a difference. If there was a difference, I didn't notice it.
In any case, there's nowhere easy to get it near me - one BP station that is invariably busy - so I've continued my habit of feeding my car on Shell Extra, with which it seems quite happy.

>Question is has anyone used this diesel?
Yes
>Is it any good?
Depends. On a Renault Dci engine it felt smoother, on a VW PDi engine there is no difference
>Does it justify the extra cost of 8 pence per litre?
Based on the above answer - no not even close.

I usually use it, the car runs well on it, it is supposed to provide extra lubricity etc, usually costs 6p/ltr more so say 5 to 6% minimal extra cost.
I was convinced by premium fuels when my Vectra V6 did 10% more mpg on Optimax.
|
surely all fuels must be made to a high spec
what makes this better than standard?
Woulld BP standard plus a shot of millers diesel plus = BP Ultimate?

Used twice in Yaris. No difference of note to engine running and none in fuel consumption (yes I do record it all).
So I gave up.
My normal fuel is either Tesco or Shell... no noticabel difference between the two...

I've used it a few of times, once to try it out, another time because I got 500 bonus nectar points for buying it.
I did not notice any improvement in performance, economy, or engine smoothness when using it. I've not done any scientific testing, just used it and subjectively not noticed a difference. Fuel consumption monitored on the dashboard mpg readout.
For me with my current car, its not worth a penny extra.
But different engines can run better than others on different fuels, yours may or may not get some benefit from it..
|
Tried it for a few weeks, and noticed no difference at all, so I've decided it's not worth the extra.
|
I used BP Ultimate Petrol in my Leon (20VT) and noticed no difference in performance or economy.
That said, I still use the diesel variant in my C-Max 2.0TDCi and am convinced it likes it! It is definitely smoother and drives very nicely on it. Not sure about MPG benefits.
|
I've used the diesel and it made no difference.
When I've used the petrol in the past I have seen an improvement in economy to cover the extra cost and a smoother driving car

On 55 litres thats £3.30 Thats half a bottle of wine. Hardly insignificant.

I drive (motoring link) to Tesco at Brooklands. they have some acceptable wines @ £4, with at the moment 30% discount on all wines, port and sherry. So the £3.30 would buy a bottle.

I can get 4 ltrs of drinkable Vin de Pays d'Oc for that money round here.
And you could probably wash the car with it or put it in the tank as well.

And I thought you people in Esher had class!

TVM said "And I thought you people in Esher had class!"
I thought class ( and civilisation) stopped south of Birmingham.. or was it Watford?

If you want the effect of these exotic 105p a litre fuels buy the ordinary stuff and add Millers Diesel Plus which costs about £10 to treat 500 litres. If any of you don't agree please tell HJ, it is his recommendation - I am just passing it on!
|
thats what im currently doing.
Were adding Millers Diesel Power Plus to our 2003 03 Polo 1.9 TDi PD 100bhp.
Ive heard theres another millers stuff for diesel specially for newer cars....dont know what its called.
Should I be using what im already using or try and find this new stuff?
|
If you have a Euro 4 compliant engine you will want to use the new one whose name escapes me - it is still Millers, it is still for diesels but it isn't called Power Plus!

I see the snakes have been working overtime again providing more oil for people to waste their money on.

Dalglish I seem to recall that other posts is that thread go on to say that the changes (if any) will not be immdiate and may not be measurable over a short period of normal driving. My thought is that anything which improves the lubrication of my fragile, 25,000 psi plus, common rail diesel pump is worth xp/litre. I don't care what minimal effect it may have on my fuel consumption + or -!

Oh Puh-leaze...!
All decent branded fuels have are indistinguishable.. there's probably more vairation batch to batch than fuel to fuel. I'd be wary of any genuinely new, differentiated fuel as it is more likely to cause problems than help.
It's called 'marketing'.
Like 'magnetic' oil molecules that really stick to the internal walls of the engine..
|
Thought I would try some of this in my Bora TDI. Drove up to the pumps pulled out the nozzle with the "Ultimate"label affixed and commenced to pump the fuel.
A breif moment later looked down to see that there was a green handle where there was supposed to be a black one.
8 quids worth of unleaded "Ultimate" had gone in.
5 hours and £140 total cost was the result so for me it was more than a waste of time !

I never bother with this stuff, not because I dont think it works. But because I dont trust fuel retailers to be actually selling the premium stuff as opposed to standard product from the premium pump on occasions. At 8p a litre extra this would make for a very good margin indeed over the standard fuel, and who's going to know, unless you carry a gas chromatograph around with you in the boot to analyse a sample ! And have years of experience as a petrochem industry chemist.
|
I bought it once when it first came out and couldn't tell the difference.
When Shell stopped selling Shell Normal and started selling Shell Extra at the same price, I went onto that almost exclusively. A couple of times I have been caught short and bought from ASDA or Sainsbury's and then next day I initially wonder why the car seems to be running a little rougher.
|
|
Used to use it in the 535 most of the time, as I had the benefit of a BP fuel card at the time it made no difference to me. It also made no difference to the performance or the economy of the BMW either.
I'm not sure that a higher cetane diesel fuel equates to higher performance and economy like higher octane petrol most certainly does given the right vehicle.
|
I noticed no difference when I put Ultimate Optimax V-Power etc. diesel in the Mercs I used to run. But I do see a difference in the Ford/PSA HDI 1.6 110 I now have in my C4.
