Currently in Normandy, in Houlgate roughly halfway between le havre and caen.
Family want to go to Paris tomorrow, something to do when the weather is as poor.
Although i am quite willing to drive and have TomTom to take me, if I could get the train then it would mean more relaxing and no hassles trying to find parking.
The couriers here are next to useless and the reception staff don't speak much English, anyone got any websites or info that could help?
I will be googling but just in case anyone had any info to give me?

Train, on second thoughts Train !
Just had a look at SNCF's UK site (brilliant idea by the French can you imagine the UK being able to do that in France ?) - won't let you book anything until 15.7.07. What I'd do is pop down to the Gare in Caen and ask, chances are there are automated booking systems there anyway.......Just done the train in Sardinia what a totally civilized way to travel.
BTW
Leaving the post here rather than IHAQ in case you are navigating the site on some miniaturized browser !

cheers for that PU, when I access the SNCF site it gives you he selection of stations. i have established the nearest one is Bayeux but that is not mentioned on the list! And when you select the option of "other stations" then paris disappears!!!!
I will keep looking........ but Caen may be the most sensible option.

IIRC Tuesday is discount day on SNCF - there's a standard money-off offer then.
The SNCF site is pretty easy to use - and you should be able to ask it for the cheapest fare.
Like the UK, time of departure and return is significant.
Bon voyage
PS: satnav or not - DON'T be tempted to drive into Paris!
|
Needs to be Monday as we head home on Tues.
Fares look dear and seem to be reservation only - anyone any suggestions for how close I can get to Paris from the West Side to a "Park n Ride" type place without actually driving into Paris itself?
My route would bring me in on A13?

I think your daft Bobbyg to even think about going there for a day. Too far from where you are, too much hastle, too tiring, and one day in Paris is too few.
Re-plan.

Agree with TVM. You will be knackered and rushed and it probably won't be worth it. Look at a cathedral or two locally, go to the pub a couple of times and have an enormous meal with the money Paris would have cost you.
|
TVM you may be right. We are only here for a week, weather has been pretty poor, so want to at least let the kids say they did something on holiday!
Have identified a train station at Maisons-Laffitte which has trains every 15 mins or so into Paris. If weather is poor we may still do that.
Alternatively there is Asterix Park which the kids would ike (they have been to Euro Disney before) I believe Asterix is good. I don't mind the driving, in fact i enjoy it. Just don't want the stress of going anywhere near centre of paris in car.
Of course if weather is good tomorrow we might just stay put and soak up some rays for once!

Just for future reference, you'll find trains scheduled on the SCNF network - particularly the TGVs -as "red", "orange" or "green".
Red are peak traffic, reservations are compulsorary, orange less busy, reservation optional, green off peak, open seating.
