BMW 535 (M30) rotor arm / timing case - norwittyoramusingname

I am currently taking the upper timing chain case of my E34 535. Now every manual I read tells me to take my distributor off, then my rotor arm and then follow up with the black cap that sits behind these two components.

However in every diagram, this ?black cap? just lifts over the rotor arm mounting, except on my rotor arm cap, the hole is too small to fit over the rotor arm mounting. How do I remove it? There is an alley key bolt in the centre of the shaft but that is going nowhere.

Any tips on getting this shifted? Thanks
