Al Gore III, 24, was stopped by police as he sped at 100mph (160km/h) in his low-emission hybrid car in California.
Marijuana and prescription drugs were found during the search of the car. Mr Gore did not have prescription for any of the drugs, police said.

CHICAGO (AP) - Drug abuse experts say the arrest of Al Gore's 24-year-old son underscores the growing problem of prescription drug abuse among America's youth.
Doctor Donald Misch directs health services at Northwestern University in Evanston. He says the drugs that police say they found in the young man's possession yesterday are campus favorites across the nation.
Al Gore the Third was stopped for speeding in California. Sheriff's deputies found marijuana along with Xanax (ZAN'-aks), Valium (VAH'-lee-um), Vicodin (VY'-koh-din) and Adderall (AD'-der-ahl) in car. The former vice president says today that his son is getting treatment.
Experts say young people mistakenly believe prescription drugs are safer than street drugs. But fatal overdoses are on the rise.

The former vice-president's son admitted he'd smoked marijuana when he was pulled over on Interstate 5. He was not charged with DUI because "a drug expert examined him and determined he was not impaired", said Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino.
