The thread on the best diesel engine got me thinking as to what is the engine most used in different cars/ The Vw 1.9 diesel comes to mind as it seems to power everything from Polos to Passats and there Seat and Skoda counterparts but I should think some of those Citroen engines are well spread.

The GM/Fiat 1.9 diesel is also spreading

Fiat
Alfa
Vauxhall
Saab
even Vans!

Figures from two years ago list the world production leader of diesel engines as Peugeot-Citroen SA, Volkswagen AG as runner-up and Isuzu as third.

World production of diesel engines rose from 11.3 million in 1996 to 13.8 million in 2000 and to 16.3 million in 2005.

Yes, the Ford / PSA 1.6 and 2.0 TDCi / HDi units are well spread, Ford, Volvo, Mazda, Peugeot, Citroen (and now Mini IIRC), the Ford chain cam TDCi is also numerous having being fitted in the Mondeo and X-Type as well as various versions of the Transit, as is the VAG 1.9 as you say.

Detroit Diesels are called VM in Europe and most manufacturers have fitted them at one time or another. They are built in Cento(near Bologna) in Italy.Ford engines are also in LDV vans.

I read somewhere recently that the world's most common power unit is the 5.5hp Honda GC160 single-cylinder 4-stroke. I had a prokart with two of them and I've seen it every sort of powered garden machinery, generators, pumps, cement mixers, winches, etc etc etc. I guess it's probably made in China now.

Not saying they are the most common but I read recently in a magazine that there are more *modified* Chevy smallblock V8s in the US than there are cars in the UK.

I can't verify the above but they did produce an awful lot of smallblocks, Wikipedia says over 90 million between 1955 and 2004, and still being produced in Mexico. They were/are used in cars, vans and trucks and not just in Chevrolet vehicles.

>>world's most common power unit is the 5.5hp Honda GC160 single-cylinder 4-stroke>>

I would guess that the most common one is the GX/GXV160 OHV engine, the GC/GCV is the OHC version that is not used in as many applications or available in as many capacity variants

The 135cc GCV135 and 160cc GCV160 were unique when launched in that they have a cambelt that runs in the engine oil. I have a Honda mower powered by a 4.5hp GCV135.

I should think some of those Citroen engines are well spread.

The PSA XUD unit powered the following cars :-

Peugeot 305, 306 ,307, 309, 205, 405, 406, 806 & Partner

Citroen BX, ZX, XM, Xantia, Xsara, Berlingo & Evasion/Synergie

Rover 200 & 400

Fiat Ulysse & Scudo Combinato (this has Cit/Pug Versions as well)

Also whole set of commercials, some of them derivatives/precursors of the above and some Tata Pickups? and I bet I have missed some as well!!

Er, Bromptonaut, didn't the Peugeot 205 have that engine too? About 1800 cc?

Indeed it did, had the XUD variant myself for a while. On my list but after the 30x variants - 'cos I remembered them first. IIRC 305 wasthe first aplication

How about the old Ford pushrod 1.1 to 1.3, or the BMC A/A+ series. Mabe not in many different vehicles, but both were in production for decades and therefore must be pretty numerous.
most common power unit? - jc2
Ford pushrods were actually 0.94 to 1.6.

IIRC 305 wasthe first aplication

I think the Talbot Horizon was technically the first (another one for the list), sold in Britain with the XUD a few months before the UK spec 305 got it.

Hello

JC2 When you say pushrod do you refer to OHV (Over Head Valve)

Is the 2.3 V6 OHV (Ford) Fitted to Cortina's Sierra's Granadas etc etc

I cannot remember what Valve system the 2.8-2.9 is so i will not comment.

Just my brains oppinions may not be factual.

The 2.0, 2.3, 2.6 2.8, and 2.9 Cologne V6s and the 2.5, 3.0 and 3.1 Essex V6s were all OHV but for the Cosworth 2.9 which had an OHC valve system. There were also a number of OHV V4s up to 2.0 ltr.

I think when JC2 says OHV he is refering to the engine generation know as "crossflow", the largest std version of which was 1.6 though was/is enlarged to 1.7 for use in Westfields / Caterhams etc.
most common power unit? - jc2
The Essex engine, tho' OHV was never refered to as OHV,just as Essex V6;just as the Cologne group of engines whilst OHV were just referred to as FOG V6/V4;there were V4 from 1.2 to 1.7l.and V6 from 1.8 to 2.9.The Cosworth 2.9 was OHC but late model V6 OHV were also built by Cosworth after the engine line was closed at the Cologne plant to make way for Puma production. The range of engines known as OHV included the crossflow range but also earlier non-crossflow and Valencia,HCS and several other forms. The 1.7 and others upto 2.1 were never built by Ford-only by outside convertors-the blocks needed to be hand picked to be bored out to 1.7-the 2.1 blocks were sleeved. All the OHV engines had a common cylinder bore diameter, just the stroke differed.
most common power unit? - cheddar
Was there a 1.8 V6? 2.0 was the smallest IIRC.

Also 1.7 is the largest the crossflow is taken out to IIRC, the 2.1 is an OHC Pinto.

Incidentally a race tuned crossflow can rev to over 10,000rpm and produce well over 100bhp/litre, so much for OHC and twin cams.
most common power unit? - jc2
Yes there was a 1.8 V6;not the most common of engines-basically a six cylinder version of the 1.2 V4.(not many people remember the 1.1 CVH either). As I said the OHV valve could only be taken out to 1700 by selecting the blocks(1650 was easily available and that is why there were a lot about)and ,yes the 2.1 was OHV and achieved only by machining out the block to accept liners. There were various twin-cam engines which used the OHV bottom end.

OHC was available in Europe as 1.3(not UK who used 1.3 OHV),1.6,1.8 & 2.0-with various compression ratios, camshafts and intake systems.Strictly(tho' a lot of people use the name incorrectly)Pinto was only the American 2.3 version of this engine in the Pinto(which also used the 1.6 OHV) and later in turbocharged form in the T/Bird and American XR4i.The correct name for the European range of OHC was T88.
most common power unit? - jc2
The generic term for all the Ford OHV range was of course "KENT".Engines,in their various forms were in vehicles from 1959 to 2002.Many more were sold as industrial engines.
most common power unit? - cheddar
Yes Kent, they were the straight fours and the Vs were either Cologne or Essex?
most common power unit? - jc2
Kent were the OHV fours;V's were Cologne or Essex-Quickest way to tell them apart, tho' obvious when you know them,is Essex has distributor at front of engine-FOG V's at rear.
most common power unit? - jc2
You missed out the 2.4 FOG V6;the 2.3 went to 2.4 when the 2.8 went to 2.9l.
