Came down this morning to find my Mazda Mx-5 (H-reg) now has no wing mirrors. 2 questions: Is it legal to drive without wing mirrors? And where would I get some new ones and how dear will they be to replace? Thanks

R/H is reqired;L/H is optional.

Try ebay for mirrors or look up mazda/eunos breakers on internet.
Not relavant in this case but I seem to recall if you have no view through your rear window, ie van, box truck, lorry etc, you need a n/s mirror as well although I may be wrong on this

driving without wing mirrors could pose a problem in the event of a coming together with another vehicle , apart from the neck ache of having to look round like a spitfire pilot , could go against you in a claim if the other driver has got his wits about him/her with a throw away camera !!!!

MOT requries O/S exterior mirror, plus either interior mirror or N/S exterior mirror.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

actually you can pass the mot with just an overtaking mirror
i know
i was that man
and i had the mot man double check it,just for interest with his local jobsworth vosa man

bb's assertion is correct for older cars, but the OP's car needs the offside mirror AND either a nearside mirror or an interior.

"s" reg polo was the car NC
It was since the new computerisation there was no interior mirror only an offside mirror on the door, this was a pass,i got the mot man to check with his superior the vosa district managers office and it was confirmed my car was a pass not even an advise,
obviously i stuck an interior mirror in for safety reasons when i got back (im a goodun).

Would seem to contradict the manual, but it's an online one, not the real bible.

i looked here first
tinyurl.com/2hyy7e
and yes according to this site its a fail but as with so many things on the mot now the goalposts seem to have moved out of all recognition and not to the good in most things either

but of course, who would ever doubt it!

To piggy back this thread, a friend put their car in for MOT and it had a few minor issues and so failed. While they were getting the bits done, they smashed one of the mirrors off (O/S). They returned to get it MOT'd after fixing the failures and it passed. Tester said as it had the mirror present on the initial test he didn't need to look at it again so it didn't fail. I was very surprised - is the MOT tester right to have issued a ticket?

Perhaps not strictly right, but he was stretching a point to be kind. Perhaps knew the car owner and knew he was going to do something about it.
Eases the wheels, that sort of thing.

Followed a car today, with both wing mirrors folded in fully, the driver holding a fag. High level of awareness. Not.

As far as I understood, if your car fails the MOT and you remove it from the premises for repair the ENTIRE MOT should be done again and there is nothing in theory to prevent swapping of items that would have been a pass before being changed when the vehicle went in for retest.
Why bother of course but theoretically it could happen. In saying that most MOT stations will only check the failed items when submitted for a retest although computerisation of the system now has overtaken common sense of course.
I've NEVER had a car fully 'retested'. Maybe I just have an honest face??!!! : o )
