mk3 golf gti temp and thermostat - adam f
Another problem now. The temp gauge does not move whilst i am driving, stays pretty much on zero. Top and bottom pipes out of the rad are bot hot and the fan kicks in every now and again. When i look at the on board computer, the oil temp is usually above 100. Also i cant find where the thermostat is.
apologise if the description sounds all jumbled

Check temp sender connection has not broken,if not earth the lead and see if the guage moves to top/max if it does new sender needed.

follow top hose from rad to head, thermostat should be in area of connection to head

Had the same problem on our Golf mk3 diesel.
It is the thermostat which is located at the back of the water pump but underneath. If you have power steering, you have to remove the power steering belt, then at the back of the power steering pump is two bolts which hold the power steering pump plate on the car, undo these two and the power steering pump and plate can then be moved out of the way alowing access to the housing with the thermostat inside it.
Undo the two bolts and then the thermostat can be removed.

If it of the same construction as ours it is the seal within the thermostat itselfwhich has disintegrated.

Hope this helps.

>>It is the thermostat

Be surprised if it is,cooling system is working ok,just not getting reading on guage.

your problem was overcooling as stat was being bypassed because of seal being broken

The thermostat is in the outlet of the pump driven by the aux belt off the crank pulley, if the top and bottom hoses are both hot its at least open and therefore working.

The temp sender is in the plastic housing that goes from the cylinder head to the top hose that leads to the radiator and has 4 wires going to it and is probably blue in colour. 2 Wires are for the temp gauge, 2 are for the temp reading for the ECU.

The temp switch for the rad fans is in the rad

Both hoses will be hot if the seal has failed or if the t/stat is out of place or has failed open!

He's getting mixed up between thermostat (which is open if both top and bottom hoses are hot) and temperature sender which is used by gauge and ecu to read coolant temp. If the top hose is hot the gauge should register providing the temp sender is connected and in good working order.

I am reading this with interest. One post says it is the temp sensor at fault, which seems reasonable, but someone says that this device also sends info to ECU. If this is the case surely the car would be running oddly, thinking that it was 'cold' all the time?

If you read OPs other posts it is running badly, he bought it this way

Thanks Dox - I have obviously missed a different thread by OP re the joys of owning a VW!
