New Roadside Hardware A19 south - Tim Allcott
Immediately prior to A684 exit for Northallerton, Steel tower with twin cameras(?) on top about 6 metres tall, immediately below the cameras a ring of downward facing spikes to discourage climbing and interference. Anyone any ideas?

hardly new. Its been there ages. One set on either side of the road.

key point is that it covers pretty much all traffic into and out of teesside. I understand that its a police thing monitoring number plates.

there are plenty of trafficmaster etc stuff elsewhere - in fact I think thers one on the bridge by this jn.

sorry Im wrong - the ones Im thinking of (by the tontine) are not 6m high. although they are twin cams with spikes.

Definitely not traffic master, there are plenty on this route, but all Blue. These are really distinctive in plain steel, and look comparatively new. Nearest thing I can think of is SPECS: but there is no camera warning sign on this route, and no second set further South, so I guess APNR is favourite. They're a little way South of the Tontine, just before the A64 junction.

sorry, A684 junction. One's you describe (spikes to prevent access) do sound like them though.

SFAIK SPECS are always on a very large 'L' shaped gantry which has a horizontal arm reaching over both carriageways of a road and with a camera per lane. That is what all the ones in the stretch between Huntingdon and Cambridge on the A14 look like and the ones on the M11 roadworks, when they were in use.

Actually I think I might be thinking of the same ones as Tim. Its only a mile or two between the tontine (macoys is it called these days?) and the northallerton jn.)

The two cams and spikes.

Def not specs cameras..

According to this morning's paper, nearly all main roads in the UK have number plate recognition cameras installed.

I noticed last night new free standing cameras on A1 southbound south of Chester le street and also near Durham 3 sep cameras on bridges ( 3 on 2 lane motorway may be overkill but presumably hard shoulder coverage also).
Do not look like ANPR but no doubt will be justified on "security" grounds.

Lots of leicester police on ANPR duty near Leicester Forest this week also.
