When should I change the cam chain on my MB E class 320CDI? It is a Jan 2001 model with 184,000 miles on the clock.

Chains aren't like belts - there's no change interval. This is mainly because they give a "death rattle" for a long period before the tensioner fails. Basically, if your car's been regularly serviced, and the engine isn't making a metallic rattling noise at idle, don't worry. It's not unusual for a timing chain to last the life of the engine. I've known Nissan engines to do over 200k on the original chain, I have no reason to believe a MB will be any different. The key to a long-lived timing chain is regular oil changes.

Never known a German taxi change the timing chain they do 1000000km before they are sold off.
