'97 Renault Megane Speedo not working - brownjl99
Hello,

I have a 97 P Reg Renault Megane. The speedo all of a sudden stopped working, its electronic.

I had a good look around the engine compartment around the Gear box and noticed a broken sensor which I suspect is the speedo sensor..

Can anyone confirm this please??

I don't think these sensors are too expensive to buy but can anyone give me any advice on fitting one? Does the old one just unscrew or pull out!?! and the new one goes in its place or is there parts internal to the gear box that need replacing??

Cheers for the Help

James

Hi James
the top pic shows the pin that holds it in so remove this and it will pull out. the earth wire on this sensor are prone to brake (follow the wire up to the bulkhead) i am suprized the sensor has broken not a common fault but the main dealer will stock a sensor as a lot of people replace the sensor when it's just the broken wire.
best of luck,

Hi Merlin,

Cheers for the advice ill try and pick on up a sensor tomorrow morning. I attempted to glue it back on as a really temporary measure and the speedo work for a short time (until I hit the first speed bump ;)) so I think the only problem is the sensor.

I take it the pin is that one in the top picture just next to the bolt below? is it just a matter of pulling it out? I gave it a good tug and it didnt move didnt want to be too heavy handed, I have a habit of breaking things :)

Thanks again

Update!

Well it looks like the pin pushed in and went out the other side, once that was out of the way the sensor pulled out no problems.

I got a replacement from Renaul looked ever so slightly different but they did say it would fit it had just been improved. Now here is my problem, I have tried pushing it back in but it wont go all the way I can still slightly see the top rubber oil seal I dont want to push it any harded and break it, so any hints on this?

Tried the car anyway and the speedo is now working but "slowly" so ~i think it is almost there, just got to get the pin back in....

Cheers,

James

Hi
Sorry should have said it goes out the other way lol. Did you line it up? should see where the pin goes in. A bit of oil around the rubber seal should help it go in easy.
