We're in Florida trying to navigate around with a Tom Tom.
We originally had a Tom Tom 1 and bought a map of the US on an SD card which worked perfectly when we visited Florida last year. However, this year we have a Tom Tom 510 and inserting the card seems to cause it to freeze so it is useless. Any ideas? Could this mean that the maps are specific to the Tom Tom model or is it more likely to be a problem with a (corrupt?) card?
Any advice much appreciated.

Probably the anti-copying security features kicking in. My recollection with TT is that you need to enter a code obtained via the web to activate the map which is dependent on the device you are using it with. Try TT help.

I'd hazzard a guess at a card problem. Because if you go to the TomTom website to buy new maps and choose both the TomTom One and 510 the latest version of US maps is 6.75, i.e. both must be able to use the same map. Whereas if say I choose TomTom Mobile 5 then the latest is 6.6.
Can you check the SD card in a computer? You're accessing the Internet from a computer somewhere when over there.

Thinking about this some more then even if it isn't a problem with the SD card you might not be able to use the map as easily as you would hope. But not impossible.
When you activated the USA maps on the TomTom One you will have used your Product Code and Device Code to create an activation code. This code ties the map to the device. If they didn't do this you could be swapping maps with all sorts of people for free.
Normally the activation is automatic if you have an Internet connection. If you do not then you have to do in manually by going to www.ttcode.com. But you would need the Product and Device codes to do this. And I'm guessing you're in Florida and do not have the product code - device code found on the About Screen.
Also you already have an activation code for the maps so you're going to have to tell TomTom you've changed devices to create a new activation code for the TomTom 510. You can normally do this once after 6 months have elapsed.
If like me you registered your product code safely on the website then you should be okay :-)

Tomtom UK phone number.... (re my shenanigans trying to download US maps earlier in the year) and their phone number was not at all easy to find
0845 161 0009

Dialling from the USA will not work on an 0845 XXXXX type number
You need
+31 20850 1004
Dutch number - TT are Dutch

Thanks for all this advice. Other half cannot remember activating any codes but I imagine he would not necessarily know this was going on. I have purchased a paper road atlas now and personally find this more fun to use - I know I am a luddite!

"road atlas now and personally find this more fun to use - I know I am a luddite! "
No you are not - maps are fantastic resources and despite using satnav, whenever SWMBO is driving I still find myself with a good road atlas on my Knee following the route - and if I am driving with satnav I always check the route with an atlas first.

you cant route plan with a sat nav. Use your Atlas to plan your route, check out the lie of the land, any interesting features, get your bearings, then programe the sat nav to get you there.
