Nick:
There's excellent information on both these cars in HJ's car-by-car breakdown. I think the 306 performed very poorly in recent Auto Express reliability surveys.

I had a Pug 306D, which my son is still driving, and it was an excellent car. The 306 D Turbo is not, however, particularly good value for money if the local second hand adverts prices are to be believed. The car seems to have that styling flair that gives them good street cred, and second hand prices reflect that.
You would get much better value for money from a ZX TD (probably a bit old now) or Xsara. These cars a mechanically the same as the Pug, but don't command the price premium.

Nick,
Ian Cook has it spot on.
We have talked for ages on these vehicles in the past, try a Search on Peugeot 306 or 306TD and see what it comes up with.

try and go for the HDI if possible, and the later ones look gr8 with the GTi alloys etc. Best bit is that they are only group 5 insurence so wont break the bank when the premium comes through.

Yes the Pug is group 5 and the Xsara (with the same engine) is group 8.

Built out of wafer thin recovered steel. Horrible.
Built like a go-kart out of meccano and old coke cans.
Had one for a year - sold it at a loss of £2k - didn't like it.
Sorry.

Just to say I agree with Ian & David, the ZX TD is an excellent car, a love mine although the engine didn't like the local floods :(
It's a question of personal taste I guess; lots of people like the 306, I prefer the ZX - you shouldn't go far wrong with either.

306 diesel is brilliant, handles like a dream, costs nothing to run and insure but a bit slow. Turbo is far more expensive and more likely to have been thrashed. Try and go for a high spec model part. ABS is tricky to find but a godsend!
