Does anyone know whether these engines (1.5 Dci and 1.9Dci) are belt or chain, and the change interval if they are a belt?
I'm considering one of these secondhand (03-04 plate) and would like to have all the facts at hand!

Belts. Don't know the change interval, sorry.

75k on a 1.9dci laguna about £80 for the kit at GFS and around £120 to fit.
If you do change one double check the vehicle ID number as there are two types of belts with different teeth count .

the 1.5 dci has belt change at 72k. make sure tensioner is changed aswell.

72k as well on my 1.9 dCi Scenic.
Another idiotic design where the water pump is driven off the back of the belt, so worth considering changing the pump as a matter of course when you have the belt done. 72k is probably well over half the typical life of water pump and if the bearings go, it'll destroy or throw off the belt anyway.
Was quoted £500 by the local Renault dealer for the 72k major service and new belt and tensioner. Having the pump changed as well "would add about 50 quid". Minimal additional labour apparently.
Cheers

Cheers for all the info - very helpful!
I guess 65k/5 years is a safe region to settle on. Some of the cars I'm looking at are approaching that so would need to negotiate that into the price.

They want doing well before 5 years they start to crack and harden at around 3 years.£500 is cuccoo land takes around 2 hours depending on how many cups of tea the mechanic has.
