I know where at least one shoe came from......Mrs PU bought a pair of motorcycle boots and wore them home (on the bike of course) she cradled the old pair on her lap and yes, lost one ! - Why one, why not both ?

If you wonder where all those deserted objects by the side of the road come from ........ and you appreciate unaccompanied close harmony vocals then I can do no more than suggest you listen to "Waiting by the road" on the album Twenty-Four Seven by Coope, Boyes and Simpson.

Thanks for the link to the other thread Bell Boy- never browsed that far back prior to posting. (Search never gave me anything either - hence I thought mine may be new - not that anything is anymore.)

Took me ages to find it too :-)

I always used to think odd shoes at the side of the road were the work of some eccentric truck driver who spent his weekends at jumble sales and then threw them out of the window as he drove around the country during the week.
A truck driving friend of mine reckons that the shoes come from people changing their shoes before getting into their shiny clean car after a day at work/ visiting the gym/ walking the dog and forgetting they've left their dirty work boots/ trainers/ wellingtons on the roof, and driving off.
He also had theories for items of clothing, building materials, suitcases and just about anything else he spotted at the side of the road.
