Vectra cuts out - Don W Brown
I have a 96 N 1.8 Vectra which irregularly suffers engine cut-out when I slow to near zero at junctions and roundabouts. This results in very heavy stearing just when it gets dangerous, especially if I'm preparing to proceed onto a busy roundabout! Vauxhall garage has had it 're-programmed' without revealing the cause. This seemed to do the trick but its back again after a few thousand miles. Does this problem ring a bell; a known bug?
Thanks in anticipation & seasonal greetings. Don

Dear Don,

It's open to other readers. Vectras have had a lot of problems, particularly early examples. Apparrent ECU problems can often be due to damp entering the multi-pin connector to the ECU. This used to happen a lot with later catalysed Cavaliers. Be interested in what other Vectra driving readers have to say.

I had a similar problem on my 2.0l Vectra a while ago. It suddenly developed a tendency to stall. Initial diagnosis was a dirty idle speed control valve, but cleaning it made the problem worse - idle speed could be anything from stall to 1500 rev/min. The local dealer said this was common, and the only solution was a new valve - in his view the 70,000 miles was a typical lifetime. One valve and £160 later) idling is again perfect. I'm told there is a modification to the breather system which can reduce oil carry over to the inlet manifold, which is worth doing, as this carry over can be a cause of idle speed control valve blockage, but the inlet of my car was still spotless despite the mileage.

John

I too had the same problem with my 2.0 1998 R reg vectra. Main dealer updated the ECU but problem did not clear. Another dealer said the cambelt was not aligned properly with the timing marks so he adjusted this. Also, the throttle body housing and ISCV needed cleaning. When I got the car back it was running perfectly, and still is. But as for the cambelt being misaligned, I think smoke was being blown up my arse, as I had the belt routineley replaced 1 week earlier, though the problem was apparent BEFORE the belt was replaced.

Intresting I assume these problems could relate to al ate model Cavalier with the two liter Ecotec motor. While aI was way from home my wife had a similar problem and our local garage cleaned what sounds like the same valve . No problems since. Does anybody have advice on stopping damp affecting the ECU since purchasing old MG, my wifes Cavalier now has to live outside. All help appreciated Chris Madley

I have a 98 1.6 16v Astra which suffers from a similar problem it does not cut out as such but will sometimes hesitate when trying to accelerate there is no pattern to this occuring except it happens either when trying to move from stationery or if throttle is applied from the engine being on overrun.
The problem first occured a year ago when the symptoms were as described i.e. stalling and then the steering becoming heavy (no power steering) the dealer had the car for a week and tried various cures when the car was returned the stalling occured once and then seemed to disappear.
At about this time an item appeared in the Honest John column about the quality of supermarket petrol, which I had been using, so I changed to a well known Dutch? company with Royal and seaside connections and the problem went away.
Due to change of circumstances I started getting fuel from a company which thinks it supplies a "complete fuel" (it adds up to this) , and the problem has reappeared, I've now changed back to Royal company and the problem seems to be decreasing.
I seem to remember that the thinking in the original item in the column was that sensors were contaminated by the supermarket fuel because of the lack of cleaning agents.

Is cleaning out the throttle body and replacing the IAC valve a DIY job? My local delaer has quoted a whopping £230 to do it, or has anyone come up with an alternative.
