Exhaust joint separation ? - Petel
Having already used the forum search, could anyone advise methods of separating exhaust joints in situations where the joints have grown together over time and the owner only has DIY tools and facilities available? Is anyone aware of tools available for doing this job?
The object is to grip the two sides of the joint and extract them without having to cut or cause major damage to one or the other.
This is a general question and does not apply to any specific vehicle.
Any input would be welcome, Thank you.

In the past joints were slotted and could be seperated reasonably easily.Modern systems use heavier clamps,no slots and seal by distorting(crushing)the outer pipe. Not normally possible to split them.

I remove the clamp, clean as much grunge as possible from the joint with a good wire brushing, and soak in WD40. I then stress the joint by say supporting one side of it, and letting the other end hang - go down the pub - apply more WD40, and wiggle it about - have dinner - more WD40 etc. - go to bed - more WD40 etc. Get the gist?
Sometimes it works!

Snap on used to sell a tool for separating slide in exhaust pipes. Basically, it was just a very finely tapered chisel with the handle at 90 degrees to the working end.
Just position (or hammer) the tapered end into the joint and give it a twist and wiggle - it opens up the joint.

i know its no help but i always find an air chisel is the only real way forward on something like this
alternatively take all the exhaust from cat backward off (if possible) then you can smack it even harder on the new block paving with hammers and normal chisels to your hearts content
third way,let exhaust company chop old box off and sleeve a new one on (very common)

I'd agree with the rapid hammering of even a cheapie air chisel, but really you need something hefty like a lump hammer against the 'stationary' part for maximum effect. As an alternative it might be worth trying an SDS hammer drill if it has a non-rotating option and a chisel bit.

Unbolt the exhaust at the catalytic convertor. Arrest one section of the exhaust in a vice, for example, and use a wrench to torque the other end. With the cat attached, do NOT use a hammer.

Thank you all for the replies so far.
Owner only has DIY tools, eg, car ramps and axle stands, so not able to get the bench with vice attached underneath the car, also need to get exhaust separated first to get rear section over the back axle ( Good job this is not a Mondeo ) Have no air hammer or compressor with which to power it.

Lets say we are dealing with a 45m/m dia pipe and seek to extract the joint. Two 45m/m internal dia clamps ( more substantial than a normal exhaust clamp ) fitted one each side of the joint with some sort of double sided, scissor action, spreader between them. Wind the spreader with socket on a ratchet to put pressure on between the clamps, then heat or release spray. Does anyone recognise this scenario please?
Thanks again.

>>Owner only has DIY tools

If the joint will not shift then it would be better to take it to a fast fit place and get it sorted, certainly would be faster than messing around with a stubborn joint IMO.
