I think the term relates to the fluid coupling used (the torque convertor). Economy is usually poorer because there is a fluid coupling - a certain amount of the power from the engine is not transferred to the gearbox, it is disipated as heat in the fluid of the TC (hence the common need for an oil cooler as part of the installation). Modern transmissions tend to be pretty economical at cruise because they use a lock-up clutch in the TC when in top gear (thereby by-passing the fluid) which makes them as economical as a manual. In the lower gears the TC is still used, so in urban and suburban drving the economy is poorer than a manual. Some transmission use a torque-splitting lockup so that in say, 3rd gear, so power is driectly coupled (e.g. ZF4HP14 passes 66% of power directly and 33% via TC when in 3rd gear).

3 speeds? Real men use a 2 speed autobox! Drives like a variomatic with a first gear.
Like they say "slip and slide its a Powerglide"
History lesson over.

Well since you mention it!
1. My car doesn't have 60 gears.
2. Manuals are for drivers, autos are for people who drive cars...
