Adjusting bi-xenons for driving abroad - Mike H
I have just bought my first car with bi-xenon headlamps - a 2004 model Saab 9-5. Although I am currently asking Saab UK about how to adjust them for continental use, I'm expecting that they will just suggest lowering them. This doesn't seem very satisfactory TBH, as the lighting will then be barely adequate (inadequate, IMHO) for safe motoring. IIRC some cars can be adjusted (usually dealer only) to adjust the asymetric beam from RHD to LHD, usually by dealers at a silly price.

How do other backroomers deal with this?

If they are anything like Renault xenon lights you cannot adjust them, keep them on dip you will have no problems.

Sorry to disagree, but I would have thought 'on dip' would have been the only time you'd have
a problem - the 'nearside' being the oncoming lane as it were - main beam seems to produce a fairly symetrical cone IIRC,
& will dazzle anyway. Since (most?) bi-xenons automatically adjust for suspension load,
is it beyond the realms of possibility that there might be a menu/configuration option via a Saab diagnostics/software facility
to switch form RHD to LHD? (although a bit of a hassle for just a holiday)

Failing that - why not just the 'traditional' bits of masking tape thingy (trapeziod shaped things usually)?

Yes, it definitely is not an option.

As you say, the height is not an issue, it's the asymetric flip-up on dip which is the problem, hence using the manual adjuster to turn them down slightly is an option but will reduce the effectiveness of the lights.

On my old 9-5 with ordinary halogens, I bought a pair of LHD headlamps from ebay - only take 20 mins to change out and replace both headlamp units complete.

Is there any mention in the handbook of adjusting a lever behind the headlights? As the 9-5 is Vectra based, there is mention of changing the headlights over when driving abroad with the flick of a lever in my Vectra handbook.

Nope, it just very helpfully suggests contacting your local dealer. For the older 9-5, it had some really useful pictures showing where to put masking tape. As the lamp covers don't have lenses and the lamp sources are smaller it could be a bit hit and miss using the masking tape method.

I have come to this topic a bit late but there is a detailed 'pinned topic' guide for adjusting SAAB 9-5 headlamps which has been posted by forum member 'sgould' on Saabscene Forum. (See link below)

http://homepage.mac.com/hahnenuk/Saabstuff/PhotoAlbum26.html

Although the photo's clearly show headlamps of an old type 9-5, this guide can apparently be used with either halogens or bi-xenons and for all models.

This has become a relevance for me because I have recently changed to a 2009 9-5, equipped with the Bi-Xenon option and bought in the UK, but as we live in France I now need to adjust the headlights. I spoke to the dealer, Concept-SAAB at Birmingham, and they say there are no electronics involved, just twiddling the plastic screws to the correct amount.

I now intend to have a 'play' in the hope of it working. However, I have seen information on web sites for other cars (Audi & VAG for example) which do indicate that auto-levelling bi-xenon headlights can only be adjusted using the on-board diagnotics.

Hopefull, SAAB for once will not be that complicated.

If anyone knows anything different, or better, I will welcome the information.

Thanks for the link, but I am a member of the Saabscene forum - and you are, as you say, "a bit late to this topic" by nearly three years :)

The answer is that, certainly on the earlier models, as you know, you can adjust the lights up & down yourself with an allen key or a screwdriver, but what you can't change is the assymmetric flip up to the left (for the UK) to the right (for the continent). However, a recent post added to the same topic is some information regarding remodelling the metallic blind inside the lamp which gives the flip-up. Unfortunately, this could be a bit of a one-way street unless you have some spare headlights! Simply adjusting them down is not ideal, particularly in the winter, as you can't see enough of the road. I eventually decided to use the round Eurolites adapters, which require no headlight adjustment, they just take out the flip-up thus avoiding irritating foreign motorists.

However, since posting the original topic, I have moved abroad permananetly and have solved the problem by buying some used LHD xenons from Germany via Ebay - not cheap! I would strongly suggest you go the same route. The other option is to get some adapters & leave them on permanently, although it is a moot point as to whether this would be allowable for the french equivalent of the MOT.
