1995 Renault Espace - auto box snatching - maxxoveride
Hi,

I have a 1995 Renault Espace Champs Elysee' 2.2 Petrol Auto MPV, and when i set off it seems like the gearbox is snatching in first. It works fine in every other gear, and changes up and down smoothly without problem. I've recently had the gearbox fluid changed, and although this has lessened the effect, it is still happening.

Does anyone know what this could be, is it something simple and cheap to fix, or is this a sign that my gear box is on it's way out?

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

Was the gearbox filter screen replaced with the new fluid? If not, get it done and add a tube of Forte Auto trans treatment. This stuff does the business in a lot of cases. Only available to the trade so try local workshops.

Without wanting to be too pessimistic, Renault autoboxes are notoriously short-lived and 12 years is a long time (some give trouble after 4 or 5 years)! Get an autobox-specialist's opinion (find one in the Yellow Pages and get him to drive it). Be prepared to hear the worst - an autobox failure on a 12y/o Renault isn't financially viable to repair.
