Mercedes C250 wiper motor change - ivan whitmore
I am about to replace the wiper motor and linkage. Does anyone have any tips or warnings about pitfalls that I might encounter please?

Is it a reasonably straightforward DIY job?

Cost me £550 inc VAT when the motor packed in 10 yrs ago - at that time the only source of the motor was MB themselves and didn't they know that and when you are 100+mls from home there is little option (It rains here in Scotland occasionally).

That and the subsequent fuel pump made me buy Japanese and to date I have spent less than £500 cost of the Windscreen Motor + Installation on repairs for 2 cars (200,000 miles)

Its pretty straightforward and there are no pitfalls as such. When you have undone all the fastners it just takes a bit of 'jiggling' to extract the motor and linkage from the firewall area. You should be able to strip the motor and clean up the commutator - that might solve the problem. Also clean and lube the self-parking mechanism.
On these MB's problems often occur due to the 'pumping rod' (i.e. the rod that the wiper arm fastens to) getting sticky in its seal. Best plan here is to pull off the plastic cover over where the rod emerges and put a spot of ATF on the rod once a month. That seems to keep everything free.

Thanks for your input. My wiper blade started to get jerky & then refused to pass over the centre V of the screen, except at almost a dead stop speed.

I have managed to buy a replacement motor & linkage as a complete unit & hope to be able to fit it myself.

Someone said 1.4 hours is the allowed time for the job by a MB technician, so I might manage it in a couple of hourse or so.

Thanks again

If you've not already done so then remove the cover over the articulation mechanism and check everything is thoroughly lubed before taking the job any further. If the seal around the plunging rod goes dry its amazing how it slows the wiper down.

Yes, the wipers on the E300D were a bit sluggish until I gave the mechanism a good oiling. I found that most of my time was spent fighting with layer after layer of rubber sealing strips and plastic trim panels - when I finally got to the motor and linkage, it was all quite straightforward.
