Anyone going over the Hog's back near Guildford watch out for the cameras on it. They are catching loads out, its a 60mph dual carriagway with no obvous reason for this.

Which side was the van on today? I've seen it when heading west? towards Aldershot a few times in the past weeks.

60mph seems reasonable to me, the road surface is very rough and bumpy, the slip roads are short (especially the Puttenham one) and there are a few cross-over junctions requiring those turning off the dual carriageway to brake in the outside lane and the visibility along the road is often poor due to mist. Plus unusually there are plenty of warnings of what the limit its. The road is also quite busy (although i agree 70+ should be safe during light traffic).

The sudden sight of the van seems to force much heavy braking to well below 60, especially in the outside lane.

They've also recently put a fixed camera on the steep 30mph hill down into Guildford which seems like a sensible place to have one for a change.

The hogs back has been a dangerous place for years. Its very straight and was used as a race track. I can remember times driving in tight packed nose to tail streams of cars at 100mph plus.

As described the surface is not good, the weather is very variable (can be very cold up there) animals abound and there is nasty junctions

60mph seems fine to me.

God TVM you are a pofaced old bore sometimes, and I bet you're younger than me.

Mike Hawthorn did himself in coming down off the Hog's Back in pre-NSL days. An elderly non-driving witness opined that he and Robb Walker with whom he was racing home from the pub after lunch 'must have been doing 80' to Walker's enormous private amusement.

Also on this site is an excellent video of a lap (in 1956) of Le Mans by Mike, with the road open to normal traffic!

This is a lovely road to ride a motorcycle along (sedately) at dusk on a clear summer evening. The view across the Blackwater Valley is astonishing.

Generally though, nobody sticks to the 60 limit over there. They'll catch hundreds.

Cheers

Well you weren't being one that day, for sure.

Poor Mike Hawthorn... The 3.4 Jaguar wasn't the most forgiving of cars although ordinary roadgoing ones on crossplies were great fun in competent hands. However 130 on a damp road with bad camber and early radials... Robb Walker who witnessed the entire thing at close quarters was surprised Hawthorn didn't collect it and recover.

As it happens, Nicole was a nanny for the Walker family in australia in 1982/3. Rob was living there then, and Stirling Moss was a frequent visitor.
