Comfortable Seats - Dave
Has anyone ever seen a survey on the comfort of car seats? Alternatively, has anyone any opinions on which manufactureres models have the best seats?

It has to be *anything* German I'm afraid by a long shot. Having owned 2 French piles of **** and 2 Golfs I have to give the thumbs up to the Krauts for their seats. As I have said in the Back Room earlier - all German seats are firm but hellish comfortable - Audi A4 have to be the most firm but soooo good. Any French seats tend to be soft and don't support the lower back. Also, Mondeo seats are horrendous (as is the driving position) - even the ST24. Go German and you will not have a problem.

I am 6'3" and 15st which isn't too huge but I cannot drive anything with soft seats etc for too long. Mondeos feel like u r sitting on a pile of cushions as u sit soooo high - I *always* look to adjust my seat down and back and it is *always* fully down already. French/Italian cars are just a waste of time re:driving position - they just fit deckchairs/sun loungers.

I have to stand up for the French car. I've just changed a Laguna for an Audi A4 and the Laguna wins hands down. Although none of this was clear when I test drove it, the A4 has proved to be the least comfortable car I've owned. The Laguna on the other hand had seats which could never be described as supportive, but were comfy none the less. It's a pity the rest of the car was let down by poor engineering. Best long distance car I've owned. (I'm 6' by the way)
Re: Comfortable Seats - Andrew Tarr
Some of the monthly glossies have marked seat comfort on a scale of 1-5 - but at the moment I can't remember which. I remember the Punto came out very well on the basis that the seats were designed at (I think) Loughborough University. At the end of the day though it will depend on each individual's shape. Japanese seats are often unsuitable simply because the Japanese are smaller than Europeans.

There is a rating in What Car Magazine but I think it is a matter of going and seeing what you like I had a Volvo 340 which had incredibly comfy seats and know of people who have fitted them to Series Landrovers because of this.
Re: Comfortable Seats - Marcus
Soft is good ! so long as the seats support the lower back !!
Re: Comfortable Seats - Marcus
Vauxhall vectra is the car with the worst seats EVER ! what a pile of utter S**T - it is german

I rest My case and enjoy my Peugeot 406 which is far more comfy than the Rip Off Passat where the money has been spent on silicone damped grab handles and such trifes

Sorry, can't agree about Vectras. Did long journeys in mine, had no problems with comfort and it never let me down! More than pleased to buy it when I left the company.

Re: Comfortable Seats - Marcus
I am not the only person to complain about the lack of Comfort in a Vectra I can assure you.
Re: Comfortable Seats - John Slaughter
I know - but it shows how subjective the whole issue is!

Re: Comfortable Seats - Andrew Bairsto
It just shows how people can different opinions,I have just got rid of a Mercedes c class .The seats were built for midgets and are not at all comfortable I now have a Citroen XM and the seats are like arm chairs after a drive of 1200km I felt as fresh as a daisy ,the same trip in the merc I needed a back specialist to straighten me up.I also have a Chevy Blazer and that has really good seats in the front not so good in the back. But I suppose you could allways buy an after market seat ie Reccaro.
Re: Comfortable Seats - Darcy Kitchin
I agree with Andrew, I ran a Mk 1 Citroen XM for 138,000 of its 165,000 miles and found it supremely comfortable. BMW and Merc seats seem too hard to me. French cars seem to suit me at 6' 3" and 15 stone. My old Renault 16 was also armchair like, athough I was lighter then. I like to feel I am sitting IN rather than ON a driving seat.
Re: Comfortable Seats - King Herod
Renault 16 is widely regarded as one of the best cars ever made, as is the Peugeot 504, Volvo 240 - they don't make like that any more..

Re: Comfortable Seats - Darcy Kitchin
Cracking site, brought back memories of loading up my 16TX with accounting machines (the precursors to the ubiquitous PC) and haring from Leeds to Coventry to Croydon to Romford, then back to Leeds. The rear seat back folded up towards the roof to make a pefectly flat floor, I remember.

A splendid car, but killed all to quickly by tin-worm.
