Fun car £5,000 - Niallster
OK here we go. Just started a new job that is very well paid AND 10 minutes walk from my house.

So I deserve a treat and want to buy a fun car. Budget £5,000. Need not be practical in any way shape or form except at 6'2" and 120 kilos no Elise's or similar as I don't want to be crippled in 6 months.

Speed and handling is good but weird is also good.

What you think?

See the FTO 'Wow' thread - for £5k you'll get a good one. I'm 6'4" and nearly your weight and I can fit in.
Or how about some kind of American car if you want to go to the other end of the automotive spectrum! Speed and handling might be a problem though...

I saw a Ford ST170 for sale somewhere for 7.5k, bit more than your budget but serious fun I would imagine.

i love my alfa 3.0 gtv v6 ive had new since 1999. could get one i think for 5k now
Fun car £5,000 - Ben {P}
I have been looking at these, and you can get one for quite a bit less than 7.5k.

However, it looks a bit like a boy racers car and I wonder whether it will be attractive to theives and vandals?

With the FTO can you run it as effectively an automatic when you want to with the tiptronic box and no when you don't?

Yes, the Tiptronic is a kind of 'dual gate' box, you can put it in D for full auto shifting or move it across to Tip mode for manual shifting. About 90% of FTO's in UK seem to be Tips.

No, if yours has a Tip function then it would be the CVT??
Fun car £5,000 - bell boy
yes
but i dont see the point of the side selection though?
i can either boot it
or
drop down to low for hills
do you understand it?

Yes. An automatic can only respond to the instantaneous speed/load conditions. It can't look ahead like a driver can. If you have a sports car like an FTO then you might want to pootle around town in D. On a B-road you might want to put it in 'manual' mode so that you can knock it down into second before a corner etc - i.e. drive it just like a manual.
I must say that the CVT on a Primera is a bit of an odd beast I never really liked them - never have driven a CVT that I liked in fact.

Porsche 944, bullet proof mechanics, galvanised so pretty much no rust worries.
Mainly cheap bits & good club support.

You should be able to get a Focus ST170 for less than £5K - a few on autotrader when I just looked .....

Drop the budget - even down to £1000. What about a big saloon (/estate - not everybody's cup of tea) with a huge engine? Audi A6 quattro, MB S class, BMW 7, Nissan QX.

What about: Ford Transit? Landrover? Toyota Hilux?
Fun car £5,000 - Ben {P}
He wants a fun car, not a knackered old wreck. QX for 1k might still be ok, but thats not all that much fun is it.
