First in an occasional series of fascinating posts ;-) We're here to talk about cars rather than moan about other road users so I thought I'd get things moving in that direction.
What's your favourite BMW?
A company with a proud heritage, producing many fine vehicles over the years, perhaps overshadowed by BMW bashing and the fact that they've made a huge sales success in the UK.
Personally I love the old BMW 700 coupe from the mid 1960s. Years ago when I was considering if it would be cheaper to enter historic motorsport, or just throw £20 notes into a burning barrel, I noticed these little cars with their delicate styling and 700cc boxer twin engines in the rear. Surely an interesting alternative to the Mini Coopers and Austin A35s?
Abarth were doing fiendish things with little Fiats, more carburettor than engine, surely a lightweight BMW would be an interesing project? I went to a classic car show at the NEC a little later and spoke to a few people on the BMW owners club stand. I was met by a collection of blank looks and denial that anything interesting could have been made before the 2002.
The 600 and 700 were available as saloon and coupe, and were characteristic of their time - think Fiat 850, slim roof pillars and a front end like a VW Fastback. Google is probably your friend when it comes to more info, I've certainly never found one for sale (this was before ebay.de and internet favourites folder) and never found anyone who remembers them let alone owned one.
Despite all that, and the fact that modern BMWs do nothing for me, I'd give a 700 coupe space in my fantasy garage.

A standard 2002, preferably in blue.

...and I also liked the M635CSi when it was around. Never drove one but liked the 'butchness' of them

|
The "Cain Dingle" 5 series, the original 3 series and of course the 507.

That bubble car thing with three wheels.
|

Unquestionably the M1 or maybe the 'Batmobile' CSL.

E21 323i - the car I lusted after in my youth....

The Isetta 300. Have you seen how much a good one sells for these days?

R1150R in black.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

The 3 series.
More common than a Mondeo but still aspirational.
An iconic car that every manufacturer would love to have in their catalogue/showrom
tourers, saloons (sorry, sedans), and convertibles; also the first major player to move their 2 door model above the 4 door and market it as the coupe.
As seen on this forum earlier: M3 V8 - dribble :-)
My own personal favourite was the 318is from the 90s (was that an E30? sorry - I don't know BM E numbers)
Of their bikes, I always liked the RT series
Love them or Loathe them - life would be much duller without BMW
|
507 - one of the best looking cars ever made. I would be tempted to get one myself but there is a small drawback of costing about £200k I believe

I'd top myself

Actually, hoping your post was TIC, that should have been "I'd top myself ;-)"
|
I think it was BMW who had the TIC...
635csi in white
840 in any dark colour
Now you're talking

118?
You are surely having a Turkish Bath?

507 is a bit too dramatic. 503 better proportioned in my opinion. Anyone seen the movie 'The Last Run' with George C. Scott, in which a very nice 503 is destroyed? Brings tears to yr eyes that one.

An E28 M5 would be very nice
|
|
i had a 1980 735i that i loved and was a fantastic car until the bills started to come in for new whole exhaust and disks and pads all in the same week
|
mate had a black 635 with a few M bits on it, with a manual box (inc strange 1st gear)...now that was a real bit of kit...........he had an enormous sense of humour loss when i pulled out of my road in it and left about £15 worth of tyre in the road........he called me that name that is really most unpleasant
to answer the question, saw a fairly new M5 the other day....and although i'd never desert the Jag marque......it looked awesome, so that gets my vote
|
|
Much as I dearly loved my 3 series in particular the 330d and the 325i petrol ( a cruel mistress - totally unforgiving but beguiling at the same time), it has to be the original M5, but then the current M5, or the previous M5 hell I love them all, especially my current 535d, the way those twin turbos whisper their little love tunes..........or the next generation 6 series, wait and see all retro BMW with none of the current daft curves and the Hoffmeister kink to boot......and of course my other car - a bike the R1200GS !
|
|
90G 635csi in black, navy or gunmetal grey metallic or any of the 7 series. The current 7 is, IMO, the best looking current BMW.
|
2002ti
but really it has to be a 2002 turbo in white with blue flashes. I mean you really want a car that has the turbo script on the front spoiler in reverse print so the car in front can read it in his rear view mirror.

Id prob have a 503 Coupe - just lovely and proof that BMW did once make pretty cars. 507 is also nice of course.
|
|
|
|
Yes TVM - agreed. Aped by Honda in the early 80s with the "CX500 orbuT" - beautiful cars.

Gosh, this is fun:
Z8. Apart from the naff interior.
E46 M3. Astonishing mix of abilities.
E30 M3. Fantastic drive and the only car in the world that looks good with such an enormous rear spoiler.
