Volkswagen Polo (Y Reg) oil burning - cockneycooky
Hi,

My Polo (Y Reg) has started using oil. This only started recently and upto now has hardly used any.....It does very few miles in a year, around 4K.

There is no blue smoke and its not leaking.

Anybody got any ideas.

Cheers

Well-known issue with these, it's the short runs causing the oil level to drop.

Take the long way to work or keep checking it regularly

Why do short runs make the oil level drop please?

No idea I'm afraid, I just remember a previos thread about this.

Maybe because the tolerances between the piston and cylinder never get as tight as they should once it's been run properly? (Heat expansion)

Clutching at straws.

take the point about the short runs....but its done short runs for a few years and only just strated to burn oil. Could it be the valve seals and if so anybody know it these can be done without removing the head..

Cheers

sounds like the piston rings have worn the cylinder bores due to petrol washing the oil away on all these short journeys
or
the rings are stuck for the same reason

cheapest cure?
change oil and filter take on a nice drive on different type roads, fast, slow, fast, fast, slow, for 50 miles, using all the gears and revving up through the range not silly though

if this doesnt work get a garage to give it a compression test and a diagnosis
