I note that a couple of years ago, AlanGowdy wrote " I wish they'd send out MOT reminders."

A friend of mine has just realised that his MOT was due about 3 months ago. How common is it for people to forget to MOT their vehicles?

on new issue mot,s you get a little detachable sticker with the renewal date and stuff ,you stick it on your windscreen (mines opposite the car tax disc) so you get a constant reminder !

There must be loads of dates you have to remember ~ birthdays for example ~ for which you don't get a reminder sent to you. Most people put them in their diary. As Ray Winstone says in the Kelloggs Optivita advert "I'm not going to tell you what to do"!

I Started a thread about this a few months ago. - The general consensus is that I should have kept a diary.

Still if the tax and insurance people can send out reminders then why not M.O.T's?

The insurance company and the DVLA have a more or less direct financial interest in getting you to pay up on time. MOTs are done by privately-owned garages and there is therefore no money for the DVLA in sending out reminders. (I have always understood that the test fee is subject to a maximum prescribed by law but is retained in its entirety by the testing station, although am happy to be corrected.)

Having said that, a Fiat dealer I used a few years ago sent a reminder when a car I'd bought new from them was coming up to its first MOT (although I had sold it some time previously). Not sure whether they bother for subsequent MOTs, though.

mk124 - congrats - you are about the only person whose answer came close to answering the question I asked :-) As for myself - I've never forgotten, just like I never forget my wife's birthday, and I don't put that in my diary!

btw, sorry I didn't acknowledge your thread. I missed your post, because when I did a forum search, I used "MOT" rather than "M.O.T"

If my wife sent out proper reminders I might remember our wedding anniversary more reliably. Sticking a tiny little note in the corner of the windscreen really isn't good enough.

Are you inviting suggestions as to where to stick it?

I think a good method would be on cars that are over 3 years old you should only be able to get your tax at the same time you get your MOT therefore if there is not tax disc displayed there is also no MOT so take it to the crusher.

Coral Family and friends - came with my printer years ago - you just put a reminder against date you want and how many days reminder before and when you turn computer on up it comes - got all my Poll tax dates and water rates down - car insurance and MOT etc.- can do it for year in advance - there must be other programs out there that do it or just use Outlook diary

>>you should only be able to get your tax at the same time you get your MOT>>

You cannot get VED without having valid insurance cover and MOT.

Many people prefer to spread their insurance, VED and MOT costs over the course of a year, so such an idea would not be very popular; in addition having a valid tax disk doesn't necessarily mean that you also have a valid MOT certificate...:-)

National, for one, send out a reminder two or three weeks before the MOT is due if you have had your vehicle tested by one of its outlets.

Get real - how do you remember partners birthday, wedding anniversary, etc,etc - you put in a diary of some sort, electronic or paper!

Politicians deny creating the nanny state but the evidence seems to be here.

I tie a knot in my neck for important dates
Most garages dont send out reminders because unless the garage knows the customer personally its usually a waste of a stamp because there is very little customer allegiance . I must get asked once a day who my mot station is and what are they like? how much? etc.
This is why mot stations loved the new prices that went with computerisation ,as they were all going to charge the same top wack price until the walls started falling down and we got some going their own way.
i dont like recommending my mot station because they do nearly all the dealers in my town charge £30 (no retest fee) and do a proper job.
Private mushters with their little moans and groans just slow the job down ,plus most mot garages have just got used to "querty" so i cant imagine a data bank of past customers is any higher than a cold bacon butty on a warm sunny afternoon on their jobs to do list.

You must have an remarkable number of friends, family and neighbours......

In my case it averages once or twice a year - if that....:-)

I think Bell Boy may be in the motor trade!

My local family run garage send out a reminders (even for the long gone BX they failed) as do both Citroen franchisees in the area.

An MoT reminder is a great idea in my opinion. Not everyone is good with remembering things. When I still had my old car, it dawned on me one day that I had no idea when the MoT was up. I went to the safe, got out the documents and checked... 3 days left.

I know someone else who bought a car recently. I asked how long does he have until the MoT is up. He confesses that he has no idea and that he should check!

People know when the tax expires; you get a reminder, and you can see the date on the tax disk itself.
People know when the insurance expires; renewal letter.
Many people forget about the MoT. Good job it's not considered a terribly serious offence (just a small fine/no points, AFAIK).

It would cost money ~ who do you propose should issue it, and who do you propose should pay for it?

They already have a central database that shows if the car is MoTed or not.
Can't be too hard or costly to query it for all the cars with MoT's less than 3 weeks remaining and automatically print out a letter. Hopefully the motorist already pays enough in tax to cover that small cost?

Then again I suppose that would count as an "IT Project" so to do that must cost millions. :(

Would any knowledgeable Backroomer care to estimate the total cost of issuing a reminder. My guess would be in pounds rather than pence.

In my case the little blue sticker in the windscreen tends to peel away and fall off after about 7 - 8 months anyway.

What I do is I have an A5 size note stuck on my notice board in the study with the MoT due date on it in big writing...
