Google maps does route planning. Try this one.
1. go to maps.google.com/
2. click on "get directions" (third line at top)
In the second line boxes:
3. type "New York" in the first box (the "from" box)
4. type "London" in the second box (the "to" box)
5. click on "get directions" button (right of From and To boxes)
6. in left column scroll down to step 23

Well; I enjoyed that!
But if you are going to do what they suggest at 23. Why stop in La Belle France?
Why not keep going up the Thames Estuary?

Doesn't make sense to drive to Boston before starting the swim - that's just adding unnecessary miles to your journey.

Yes it does- that's just adding unnecessary miles to your journey.
No other way round actually, you forgot about the curvature of the earth and the way the map is drawn. You need to drive much furhter north to novia scotia to cut down your swimming miles., The water is too cold up there tho.

Someone at Google has to have a bit of sense of humour here.... "swim" being part of the directions ;-) I like that.
I tried planning a route out of curiosity between Brindisi in Southern Italy and Corfu. Had just seen one of those house programmes. Thought it would include a section on the ferry but no Autoroute has a section of 65 miles across the sea where the directions start "Bear left onto local roads" :-)
I know Autoroute does not have roads for Greece but it should say no route. For New York to London it does not have the necessary connections to calculate a route.

Just thought... wait till the papers catch up on this. The number of people drowned in the atlantic after following directions from Google Maps! Worse than even following advice from sat nav. ;-)

I've just tried this on Google Earth. Apparently it's 3938 miles (the swim is 3462 miles), with an estimated journey time of 29 days and 10 hours.
Four weeks seems pretty good. Doesn't the QM2 take about a week?
