air con+fuel consumption with fan speed! - jamiev
hi, i have a 53 astra sxi and was wondering if my fuel consumption will go up when i increase the fan speed when the ac is on?
ie; when ac is on will fan speed 1 use more fuel than fan speed 4?
or is it just the same independant of fan speed if the ac is on?
hope you know what i mean!

thanks

No idea but I'd be amazed if the difference is enough to notice. The higher fan speed may be useful to distribute the cool air faster when the interior is warm (my CC system does this automatically) but it's usually too noisy to leave on for long. In any case, isn't the AC compressor either on or off? The other controls merely control the distribution (and re-heating) of the cooled air.

The compressor on the AC will have to work harder if you want to cool more air. The compressor is driven by the engine, and so it will cause the engine to work harder. That will use more fuel, but not much. I doubt you'll be able to tell.

Your driving style will have far more impact on mpg than the speed of the AC fan.

Just be comfortable and to hell with the fuel consumption.

On a hot day, switch AC on, open the windows slightly to let the very hot air out of the cabin then close the windows and get the car cool and then put re-circ on, the less hot air you drag in from outside, the less work the aircon has to do.

Precisely! My Golf MKV 1.6 FSI has done over 41mpg since getting it in Dec. 2004 and that's with the aircon on whenever I get a touch of the vapours - I'm very allergic to humidity and heat and therefore use it a lot. And yes, I think that aircon probably affects petrol consumption by a least 5%, or may be more.

I only use mine when its uncomfortably hot, so in those conditions I think - stuff the fuel consumption.

I used to have a Peugeot 405 where if I switched the aircon on with the engine at idle, it would stall the engine.. (Admittedly the car was a bit of a banger and I couldn't afford to get it looked at).

Seems strange to me that so many want their cars to have A/C and then worry about the small increase in fuel consumption...:-)

My understanding is that the fuel consumption increases by about two per cent using A/C, but how accurate that figure is I don't know.

With CC systems, does anyone know if the AC runs continuously or only when the computer decides the incoming air needs cooling? I'm curious because I've noticed no significant difference in fuel consumption between winter, when it sometimes occurs to me to turn the AC off, and summer, when it's on all the time.

between winter when it sometimes occurs to me to turn the
AC off and summer when it's on all the time.

No matter what the system or how sophisticated it is, I personally would never have mine on all the time as the drying effect of aircon doesn't do much for the nasal passages or for those who suffer from bad eczema (apparently).

to heck with the mpg.........feel the quality and the width

On both basic A/C and ECC, the compressor cycles on and off, just as it does in domestic or commercial systems, or a refrigerator.
