My daughter's asked me to give her '53 reg 1.8 MX5 a service.
The oil fiter looks like a right pain. I can see it under the inlet manifold, but access seems near impossible. Has anyone got any tips please?

It is in a bit of a silly place, isn't it.
I have been lucky with the one in the family, getting a good grip with a dry rag round the cleaned up body of it has been enough to just remove it.
If that had failed I would have looked at the spider type removing tool which goes over the end and is turned with a socket.
I did try my chain type but couldn't get decent purchase on it.
Last resort, desperation only would have been punch hole in it with large screwdriver and undo it.
This is really messy and I am always wary of broken bits getting into the oilways.
Put a decent sized piece of rag under the filter to catch the spillage.

Many thanks, I'll try swearing at it as well.

I'm not sure of the later ones, but I can just get my arm in to take the old one off. I read that some go in via removing the OSF wheel (but that may have been LHD foreigners). The three pronged spider things mentioned work well to get the initial freedom.

My son's is a 1998 1,6. From looking in his manual it seems that the filter is in the same place on all models.
The MX5 is a "pretty" car. I would advise against swearing at it to start with. When it proves to be a bit of a problem and blood is dripping from a few knuckles and the temper is fraying then a few choice words are quite in order.

Managed to do it. Couldn't get a grip with my right hand, I didn't know I had so much strength in my left, although it's left me with a few nice scratches off the rubber mounted bracket that looks like it's holding fuel pipes.
I'd better hide the copious amount of oil-soaked rag before putting it in the bin, I don't want the council accusing me of polluting their landfill.

Well done.
You could always burn the rag instead of landfill, to save pollution! ) :

The spin-on and cassette filters on MB M103 and M104 engines are pigs to deal with, such is their awkward position at the rear of the engine, unless you have the MB special tool (it fits both), which can be purchased for the princely sum of £8.50. Perhaps Mazda have something similar.

I believe an oil filter relocation kit is available for the MX5. Try www.mx5parts.co.uk.
Plenty of friendly advice for the owners club at www.mx5ocforum.co.uk
