Apparently Fiat sales went from 7.x% to 8.2% in the 1st 3 mths of 2007.

Renault did the opposite going from 9.2% to 8.3%

Renault Vs Fiat = draw (1st for many a long year)

Demand for Meganes & Clios Falling - Grand Puntos on the way up!

Are Euro people abanding Renaults as unreliable and buying Fiats hoping for better?

Its the market just correcting itself. Renault had a few new models that were selling well and now they have slipped back to where they were before. Fiat slipped back in the last 4-5 years because the Punto was getting on a bit, the Stilo wasn't a great offering and they didn't have anything else in the major sectors. Since the Panda came out and now the Grande Punto sales have been increasing to put them back were they were.

Doubt if this is the reason as if you want something more reliable than a Renault, FIAT would hardly be the first choice!

The grande Punto is a fine looking car. It has classic classy trendy good looks and even nicole was tempted. Fiat have not made a good looking car since the 128 3P

I think the only really beautiful Fiat I've seen was the 850 coupe - early 70s I think. Most if not all now gone to the great rust-heap in the sky, no doubt: if there are any still around they would be worth something.

Mrs B hired a Grande Punto the other week - 1.2 8v I think. Skins and rice puddings, really disappointing, and the interior no better than a Panda IMHO.

.
The Fiat 850 Coupe was one of my first cars, and a really great little car it was too. It had a centrifugal oil "filter" which was very easy to clean.A very quiet little car at speed, and very economical. One very bad design fault was to place the fuel filler under the rear "bonnet",just above the exhaust manifold! A little dodgy to drive in high side winds. As for being still around,I saw one recently which seemed in good condition. I don`t recall rust being a problem ,unlike my next car the 128 3P. A nice car but had serious tin-worm problems.
As for Fiat`s best looking car, first prize has to go to my present car,the Coupe Fiat as they like to call it. Fiat seem to have stopped making coupes now ,leaving the job to Alfa.

I took a test drive in a Grande Punto 1.2 8 valve and it was the slowest thing ever, no throttle response when pulling away and struggled to hit 70mph. Has identical engine as fitted to the Panda so obviously far too underpowered. On the good side it is insurance group 2 and has loads of safety kit and feels very solid but far too boring. If they fitted the 1.4 engine at around 75 bhp it would be acceptable. Amazing they are still using the 8 valve FIRE engine that appeared about 25 years ago. They are sweet and smooth but need to be in a lightweight small car to be most effective.

I saw a black Grande Punto today with those slim spoke wheels which seem to suit it best. Such a pretty, desirable car, I think id forgive it a low rent interior and lack of pace - first time I can ever remember genuinly finding a supermini desirable. I presume its best with the diesel?

I can imagine the 1.2 G Punto to be underpowered. I sometimes drive my mothers, and thats a 1.9JTD with 120BHP. Great car, very quick but not quite as efficient as I would have said. Very well kitted out aswell with dual zone climate and blue tooth among the things fitted.
