Parking on Bank Holidays - horatio
Might aswell try to get an answer for this one.

I think I have in the back of my mind that a Bank Hol such as today counts as a Sunday for single yellow line parking, with hours signed something like "No waiting", Mon - Sat, 8am - 5pm

Is this right? Could I have parked there today without fear? I opted to wait until someone vacated a valid parking space, but of course there were cars parked on yellows with no tickets on them.

The highway code (that I found) only mentions Bank Hols for when the days are not mentioned on the signs, but annoyingly does not say what the case is for when the days are mentioned.

Waiting restrictions

Waiting restrictions indicated by yellow lines apply to the carriageway, pavement and verge. You may stop to load or unload (unless there are also loading restrictions as described below) or while passengers board or alight. Double yellow lines mean no waiting at any time, unless there are signs that specifically indicate seasonal restrictions. The times at which the restrictions apply for other road markings are shown on nearby plates or on entry signs to controlled parking zones. If no days are shown on the signs, the restrictions are in force every day including Sundays and Bank Holidays. White bay markings and upright signs (see below) indicate where parking is allowed.

You don't seriously think that the authorities would spurn any opportunity to fleece the motorist do you?

The only way to really make sure is to read the Order for that particular restriction, in the good ld days when the Police policed Yellow Lines Good Friday was an exception. I doubt wether there was a blanket Bank Holiday clause (these are like the busy days when yellow lines were needed to prevent obstruction)

In Lewes, Sussex, Bank Holidays are not classed as parking holidays and yesterday the wardens were busy booking cars parked in otherwise deserted streets. The controlled parking zone scheme is so popular that over 200 meters have been blown up! also every meter has a sticker on it saying "exploding parking meters are a threat to your safety"

"in the good ld days when the Police policed Yellow Lines"

In the good old days you could park on any yellow line in Westminster after 1pm on a saturday. No hassle, get as close as possible to John Lewis and dive into the first gap you saw. When they abolished that perk I stopped shopping in London and took my business to Brent Cross.

In Leicester (where parking is now a council responsibility, and double yellow lines have been painted in places where it would be illegal to park anyway) bank holidays are one time that you're guaranteed to see attendants out in force. I'm sure many people assume (wrongly) that these days are treated as Sundays.

I also saw a pay-and-display car park being patrolled at 10.30 on Thursday evening. Although street parking is free after 6, the car park isn't free until midnight; the council obviously want to squeeze as much as possible from those not expecting this to be enforced.

Where I live, parking is free on Bank Holidays (and Sundays) in the car parks ,as the wardens don't work those days.
Of course at Easter, this only applies to the Friday and Monday, you still need to pay on Saturday.
