Hi all, Advice please. I need to check out the history of a car before i part with £3,000 in cash. Any advice please on which is the one to use, as there seem to be loads online. I am a r.a.c. member, but it does not appear to give any discount for a online vehicle check. Thanks all, Graham.

make it a condition of sale that seller gives you an up to date hpi printout
this will tell you everything you need to know
make sure seller isnt selling a just paid out on write off though, as these can take up to 14 days to be on the hpi sheet (use your nouce).

If someone asked me to pay £50 for an HPI check on a cheap car I'm selling, I'd tell them to clear off and buy it themselves.
I'd never trust one supplied by the seller - I doubt the guarantee offered by HPI would be valid either.

Hi Martin123. Thanks for that, good point. I wish to find out which H.P.I would be the best to use for an online check. Thanks again Graham.

Cheers Bell boy for the advice, I have got this car at the sellers lowest price she will accept, end of, so really I thought I would do it myself online rather than ask the seller at extra expence to her, I dont mind as the price for the car is good. Which one do you think i should use. Thanks again for the reply, Cheers, Graham.

nice to see someone checking a vehicle before they purchase, hope everything turns out good.

Hi im45now, Thanks for that. Do you think an R.A.C. H.P.I would be adequate ? Cheers Graham.

One minor problem here: if you rely on the seller supplying an HPI check, what's to stop them running something up if they have something to hide? Could you spot a forged HPI document? Given that if the seller's dodgy then other documents would be forged, running off an HPI check forgery would be a doddle. I reckon I could create something to fool 95% of people in half an hour on my PC.
No, just stump up the cash for an HPI check. For the feeling of security it'll give you, it'd good value.

"it'd"? "it's" - oh, for an edit button (or the ability to proof read)

Hi there Vin (P), I agree and am going to get one online. I was thinking about an R.A.C. one. I hope i am allowed to mention them on this posting, Thanks, Graham.

I didnt realise you were buying privately graham.
As i said at the beginning, just be aware that a hpi report if done by someone dodgy may be done prior to the car being financed up somewhere,or listed as a write off.
Only a very small amount of people in the world would be caught like this, (i was 13 years ago ish )
The reason i said get seller to do hpi is, i assumed they were a sales place and any sales place worth its salt has access to hpi ,it is also very cheap for them if part of the club. You can download the information while the customer is there and hand them the sheet ,or even go to the hpi website and show the information once you are logged in, if they had done it earlier.
Im sure if you were given a hpi sheet that someone had "knocked up" on a computer then a quick call to hpi would confirm or deny authenticity.
With regard to rac these are part of the aviva group which also owns hpi so you are using the best service available in a roundabout way.
Good Luck :-)

Hi there Bell boy, Thanks for the info, i will do it through the R.A.C. then online. Thanks again, Graham.

Hi all, well i did an H.P.I. check through the R.A.C. online, and every thing came back perfect. (£24.99). At least it is peace of mind having done it. Thanks all for your comments on this. Cheers, Graham.
