The local BP station is changing to Shell, I used to find Shell and Texaco diesel better than most though have mainly been using BP Ultimate for some while now due to the convenience of the local filling station.
Shell V-Power diesel is not nationally available though perhaps they will sell Shell Diesel Extra, which one is the equivilent of Ultimate these days? Perhaps I should go back to standard diesel + Millers?
Thanks.

I have found that Shell or BP are literally miles better than cheap supermarket brands.I do 30K plus miles per annum so mileage is a big factor as is engine condition. I do find strangely that Shell does seem to give me a fraction better consumption rate than others. You get what you pay for and you never see Tesco or Asda petrol being put into racing cars!! Concrete.

I try and stick to Shell.
The V-Power diesel is going to become more widely available, according to their web-site.

Aren't the racing cars getting what Shell and Texaco pay for?

Just heard that they will only sell std diesel until July, perhaps that is when V-Power is being rolled out.
Standard diesel + Millers it seems.

Bit of info - I spoke with Shell Customer Services last week, apparently they have 31 outlets for Shell V Power Diesel all in the South East - I wanted a list of Shell V Power Unleaded and was told 98 % of their filling stations stock it.
|
Round here Shell only sell Diesel Extra - no V-Power as yet. I always use it, sometimes with a drop of Millers. I've never found BP Ultimate to give any advantage over the Shell stuff.
|
I use both Diesel Extra and BP Ultimate as both are available locally. Have found that BP gives an edge for engine quietness, smoothness and responsiveness - all noticably better than Shell, which is better than most other major brands, but the fuel consumption doesn't seem to vary whatever it's burning. Can't comment on supermarket juice as I wouldn't touch the stuff with the proverbial.
Curiously, I seem to get even better results when there is a mix of the two in the tank.

What's wrong with Supermarket diesel? Surely it comes from the same refineries and is the same stuff? Or am I missing something?
Even if it is slightly 'poorer' grade, would you notice it on the road? 70 MPH on the motorway is hardly putting the car under any stress is it? Does it warrant extra cash? I for one think not but I am willing to listed to the arguments....

Couldn't resisit - how do they calculate 98%?
30 stations stocking it would round UP to 97%.
So, 30 and a bit more stations stock it....:)

CJay, are you confusing the 31 VP diesel outlets with the 98% VPUL outlets?
|
|
No because we are talking apples and pears
31 outlets have V power DIESEL
and
98% have v power PETROL

Diesel Extra is supposed to be 54-55 cetane number, which is higher than other diesels apart from Ultimate. V-Power is the new super-duper stuff on limited availability.
FWIW, my Passat 1.9PD performs exactly the same on any diesel. I may THINK it's different on different fuels but the stopwatch (in-gear acceleration) says not. No differences in consumption either, certainly none that can't be accounted for by factoring in ambient temp / driving conditions etc.
|
Noticed that the receipt from the now Shell station says Diesel Extra, does this mean that Extra is Shell's std diesel now?
|
Yes, Shell Diesel Extra is Shell's standard diesel these days.
|
I puuled up at a Shell this evening but baulked at paying over £1.00 a litre for the Diesel V Power stuff.
Can it really be cost effective paying the extra 6p a litre?
