Auction Prices for a 156 jtd sportwagon? - adverse camber
Hi,

I wonder if anyone could give me an idea of the prices at auction for an alfa 156 jtd sportwagon diesel?

Looking at the online glasses guide it is quoting very reasonable prices for 2001/2002 models. However I cant see anything like that low on autotrader. there are some on ebay but I could easily spend a lot of time travelling to look at rubbish and being in North Yorkshire there are not many very close to us.

So I am thinking of speaking to one of the auction buyers, but I dont want to waste their time if the prices are actually far higher than glasses suggests.

thanks

I sold a December 2000 model with 93000 miles on it earlier this year for £2800, which was cheap because I needed shot of it in a hurry (long complicated story involving an unsettled drugs debt and some dodgy bloke in a borrowed merc convertible). Other comparable cars were going for £3k-£3.5k.

Relatively rare car and much sought after, so few bargains to be had for "straight" cars.

Have a look on www.alfaowner.com for info and advice.

cheers No Do$h, although now I am interested to hear more...

Glasses suggests £3.5 will get me a late 2001 with 80-90K (so post t/belt) but as you say - not many about.

And I have looked at alfaowner and alfa156.net which both suggest that these are quite reliable.

Things to watch for are:

Rear trailing arm bushes. These tend to go fairly regularly if the car is used on rough roads but are a relatively cheap part to replace. Only downside is that you will usually have to remove the brake disc to get to the rear outboard bolt on the arm. A motorway cruiser can easily see over 100,000 miles without showing any problems with these bushes.

Front wishbone bushes, upper and lower. Can wear over time although by no means all cars have this problem.

Both the above can be diagnosed by a quick test drive. Any knocking over speed bumps or similar points towards a bush/bushes needing attention and will require further investigation. A well sorted 156 will still feel pretty tight through the bends. You can massively improve the ride and handling by fitting a momo/alfaromeo strut brace across the rear of the engine bay; a very popular modification for 156 owners.

MAF sensor will gradually die if it gets dirty, a problem common to pretty much any car using Bosch hot-tape MAFs. VW owners have had this problem in their droves too. If the car has a noticable flatspot at around 2500rpm try unplugging the MAF (passenger side of engine bay, about 12-18" back from the front scuttle). If the flatspot goes then the MAF needs cleaning or replacing. To clean it, get some foaming PCB cleaner from Maplin or similar and some swabs. Remove the MAF, spray the interior with PCB cleaner and gently swab the tape. Note: The MAF goes through a self-cleaning cycle approx 45 seconds after the engine is switched off, during which the wire filament heats up. Cleaning doesn't always work, in which case ebay is a good bet for a new MAF.

Have fun!

This is another example of guide prices being just that, ie a guide. Alfas have poor reputation for residuals but a lot of their models now hold their values no worse than most other makes. Just like the motoring press though, reputations die hard

Dear No Dosh,

We have a Fiat Marea Diesel (R registration) (TD100ELX) and have problems finding any manuals to fix things. Haynes don't do one it seems! Do you know where we can find a manual anywhere, please? (The problem at the moment is that the fuel pump is leaking.)
Thanks,
Uda
(This is a reaction to stuff you wrote elsewhere on this site a coupla years ago! Hope you don't mind remembering your old Fiat Marea. Thanks!)

Sorry Uda, no idea on where you might source a haynes-type manual, although there is a prolific market for workshop CDs for Fiats and Alfas on ebay. I had a workshop manual CD for the 156JTD and it was superb.
