My daughter showed me her 53 plate Picasso yesterday, and as she or her husband had not discovered how to open the bonnet, nor shown any interest in doing it, I had a look. I could not find a cooling fan for the rad. Am I missing something obvious, but there is a big gap between the radiator and the engine. Is it somewhere else, or what ?

Have you looked at the front of the radiator as opposed to behind? Not sure about the Picasso, but the C5 has its fan forward of the radiator and you can only see it by looking through the front 'grille'. This seems to be quite common these days. It's also made of black plastic so in the gloom you can't easily make out the actual blades. Try letting the car idle for a while until the fan cuts in and you'll probably hear it cut in - that will help trace it.
