Skoda Turbo - bintang
Friend has a turbocharged Skoda. I don't know the model but it is a smallish hatchback, four years old from new . The turbo has gone down and she she is being asked £1200 to fit an new one. I have no experience of turbos but is this a reasonable life and cost?

Hard to say what the life should be - depends on use and maintainance - what's the mileage? I wouldn't say its that unusual though.

Price looks a bit high to me - is this a main dealer quote? There are turbo specialists around who would do the job for 30%, or more, cheaper than that.

Normally they last much longer than 4 years. Purhaps its had a hard life and has been regularly switched off while the turbo is still very hot or oil change intervals have been extra long.
Also you don't say the mileage or if its petrol or diesel. Or if the price is that quoted by a main dealer or independent.
As its only 4 years old you might get a main dealer to contribute to the cost if you push them.
Skoda Turbo - The Gingerous One
a friend has a T reg Audi 2.5 TDi and his turbo went after 7 years & 135k miles. cost to replace at an independant garage in Bristol was £600.

But it didn't actually make much difference, clearing out the breather hoses did however!

Very short on hard info here; but with a bit of educated guessing, this could well be a 1.9 TDi. [I can't recall a small Skoda with a petrol turbo in it?]

A 1.9 would usually have a VNT variable-vane turbo - hence the price. Many of those get knee-jerk changed by dealers before they do the legwork to find the real fault.

Just because it's got an over-boost code doesn't mean that it's necessarily the turbo. In fact; it's more likely to be the vacuum hoses; the turbo-control solenoid; or an issue with whichever type of MAP sensor is fitted.

Model; year; engine type/code and size and the exact fault-code found would be a big help. In the meantime, tell her to hold fire.

In addition to Screwloose' good advice, look at this site which describes how a simple cleaning of the VNT turbo actuator can be accomplished: www.technologie-entwicklung.de/Gasturbines/VNT15-T...l

IIRC, a turbo failure is rare, and when it happens there is much smoke and mess, so can hardly be mistaken. Poor running, power shortages etc are usually due to the minor malfunctions Screwloose mentions. Be very wary of the 'turbo is duff' diagnosis unless there is evidence!
Skoda Turbo - dieselhead
If it's a diesel a new turbo from Garrett is approx £5 - 600 (cheaper if its petrol).. Remanufactured are a bit cheaper but I wouldn't bother with them as they can be faulty and it's too much hassle to change them. Seems a bit expensive i wonder if they got a quote from a dealer for the turbo..much more expensive.
Agree with the above unless it's noisy/smoky shaft broken or the vnt actuator wont free off then it's unlikely to be the turbo.

I think the Skoda Fabias use a KKK (at least the vRS is KKK, not Garrett)
