Which one is better: Galant Or Xedos - mtz
Hi Guys

I am currently looking to replace my current ride with a better one and I have narrowed down my choices to Mitsubishi Galant and Xedoss 6/9.

There are the options I have for my budget

1. 2001 X Reg Galant 2.5 V6 24V (AC+LPS) which has dont approx 75K mile for under 3K
2. 1999 V Reg Xedos6 2.0 V6 which has done 44K Miles for under 3K
3. 2000 V Reg Xedos9 2.3 Miller which had done 80K Miles for under 3K

After reading quite a lot of review i found that there are some general faults with these cars.

With the Galant quite a lot of complaints about the Auto Box
With the Xedos6 again problems with the Autobox and
With the Xedos9 The supercharger failing and the sutobox.

I dont know how much of this is true and I would appreciate if any one in here could help me come to a decision. All these have have leather trim and all the luxury inside.....

Can anyone please tell me which would be a better choice and how are these cars when it comes to maintanance cost.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Cheers
Prav

Well, to repeat some of what I've learned on this site and elsewhere, these are all old, largish, unusual and complex cars, which are likely to be expensive to fix and hard to get parts for. The standard advice is to buy on age and condition, not mileage - this assumes that you like the cars themselves equally. Might be sensible to know in advance who's going to maintain it for you and get an expert opinion on the car before you part with your money.

Can't help thinking I'd be looking for a good Mondeo on this budget, though.

Previously in the Backroom, people have had nothing but praise for the Xedos 6/9 and it is considered something of a sleeper. Never heard of any problems with the autobox on these, which it would have shared with the MX-6 coupe.

Of all these, i would look at general condition first and then decide on the car after.

Thanks for the reply Guys..

WillDeBeest : I am switching from a Mondeo MK2 2.0. The car is reliable but I am looking for a change.

OK then. FWIW, a cricket contact of mine had a V-reg Xedos 9 for quite a while. He's never been the most reliable of teammates but I don't remember hearing him blame the car for any of his no-shows. He's got an X-type now, though - we may be lucky to see him at all this summer!

The Galant will probably be the easiest to run and cheapest to repair (although still not cheap relative to many more popular cars!).
Parts for the Xedos could be thin on the ground - they are good cars, but I would avoid the s/charger.

The Mitsi 6A12 engine in the Galant is pretty much bomb-proof apart from the idle stepper motor (unstable idle) - new part from a specialist supplier is under £100 and 15 mins to fit. Its similar to the engine used in the FTO, so parts availability is good. Starters, alternators, rads etc can be obtained at sensible prices. Listen for noisy tappets though (£200 for the set and a couple of hours to fit). Front suspension bushes and discs wear fairly rapidly, but are not too dear from aftermarket suppliers and the cars are straightforward to work on.
The autobox is not that reliable. Manual is very relable, but in common with nearly all Mitsi boxes you will find it notchy, especially when cold.

The autobox in the Xedos is Japco and pretty good. Body panels, rotating electrics, radiator etc will be pricey and aftermarket availability very poor. You may not need them though. All in all a bit more of gamble than the Galant.

While these cars are rare in the UK, they are relatively common here in New Zealand. A search for NZ based motoring forums (fora?) could reveal a place to ask the question.
I owned a Eunos 800 (Xedos 9) with the Miller engine. I had no problems with it, and it was a good performer. These cars have lots of extra toys, and are very well made.
I replaced the Eunos with a MItsubishi Galant Estate (Legnum) VR-4. This has the 6A13TT engine, but almost all of the rest of the car is the same as what you are interested in. The best insurance against problems with the auto box is to have it flushed by a specialist. The rest of the car is conventional and not difficult to work on. The forums at www.clubvr4.com are friendly and knowledgable about Galants.

One problem with old Xedos' is the work required to change the cam-belt. In the Xedos 6 I think the wing assembly has to be removed. If the one you're thinking of buying is due a cam-belt change....
