Been looking at the new Volvo S40 and V50. V50 I think looks nicer in some ways, but when you look at projected residuals the V50 is about 10% worse than the S40 at 3 years old. I always thought small saloons in the UK never sold that well and that Volvo estates (albeit the V50 is smaller than say a V70) sell like hot cakes.

Haven't looked for a while but my impression when they were launched was that the V50 was hugely overpriced, presumably because Volvo knows that its estates will sell. I seem to remember that a 2.0D V50 was close to £20,000, which seemed an awful lot for a car that's tight on space for everyone and everything bar the people in the front seats. The S40 is quite a bit cheaper and actually looks quite good value with the smaller engines, so it doesn't have so far to fall.

Also, you can buy it with a Ford badge on it (Focus estate) in identically engined 2.0 TDCi guise for under £14k with a bit of shopping around.

Cheers

S40 is exactly what I need from a car and ticks all the boxes but one. And the missing tick is the reason I won't buy it - because it's saloon, not hatchback. Anyone who ever done something around their own house know saloons are useless. Hatchbacks are by far most popular form of transport anywhere in Europe. Even large barges are mostly bought as hatchbacks - vide Mondeo, Vectra, Avensis etc. So, in short, if I really want to drive Volvo, it will have to be V50, never S40. And because for most people, just like me, it's either usable boot space or nada, V50 will fetch higher prices one second hand market.

Point taken, but some people do like a traditional 3-box with a secure, separate boot. Problem here is the S40 boot is tiny!

Pretty sure Volvo did cut about UK£1000 off the entire S40 and V50 ranges about 6 months ago? Pricier than the Focus for the presumed brand/image/status of course...

Thats why I only looked at the V50 for about a microsecond when I was choosing my next estate car for around £20K !!

"Hatchbacks are by far most popular form of transport anywhere in Europe."

GB is more hatchback-focused than some European countries. Last time I went to Dublin (approx 3 years ago) there were lots of saloon shape (i.e. not hatchback) Corollas, 323s Almeras etc.
