Driving up the M23 this morning I noticed the matrix sign before the M25 junction had displayed "Keep left unless overtaking". Finally some useful reminders to all the MLOC members! Unfortunately it was just before the motorway splits off into slip-roads for different directions, so keeping left may have sent you in the wrong direction. I can't say I noticed whether it made any difference, as the rest of the M23 came to a standstill after that, but at least the thought that counts.

The signs annoy me. A lot. An awful lot,
They seem to have no concept of "A blank sign gives as much information as a displayed message" They fill these things up with any old tripe rather than have it not displaying anything at all.
Result: Signs always on, with the chance you may miss something of note or importance. If there is nothing going on, let the blank sign convey that message,

They should tell jokes with them. Or display poems, line by line. Over the course of a year motorists could become incredibly well read. Call it the University of the M6.

Trouble is, this government would turn it into another PFI job, so you'd find yourself reading creationism sponsored by Peter Vardy.

I very occasionally see that message on the M1, and its always a welcome sight; I see hundreds of drivers every week who IMO need to be reminded of this.
I have only once seen a more forceful version, "DON'T HOG THE MIDDLE LANE"! The sign operator must have been having a bad day; and I didn't expect the word 'hog' to be in the official lexicon of the Highways Agency.
I agree that, "Don't drive while tired", and "Don't phone while driving" are pointless (on the latter, we all know the law now don't we?).
I also find it silly when the signs tell me there is congestion on some A-road I've never heard of, 80 miles south of where I am, which must only be relevant to a tiny proportion of the drivers on the motorway. If there is a crash off the motorway at junction 12, start telling people at junction 20, not 28.
But I like the lane hogging ones as its one of my pet hates.

Many overhead signs in France just give time when there's nothing else to say.
I've never seen one yet that agreed with the car clock though...
