Doesn't the handbrake light illuminate if your brakes are worn.

I am a bit confused, the switch for the hand brake is located under the handbrake and has a plunger on it
so when the hand brake is pushed off , the plunger is pushed in making contact on the switch terminals, thus
the light goes out,or in my case not!!
I dont think its conected to the level or the pad ware electrode, but i could be wrong.

Be a good idea to check fluid level, as usually the wiring is on the same circuit ie H/B F/L and brake pad wear indicator unless thats audible instead?

As Steveo says (and to expand on my earlier suggestion), check the brake fluid level.

Thinking about it, twice i have had brake light warning switch illuminate with the handbrake released and its always been the switch/plunger on the brake pedal.
That was on a escort and orion though so maybe vw's are different.

Before you even think about driving the car open the bonnet & check the brake fluid level!

That's the brake light switch - nothing to do with the "handbrake" light.
Is this light red with an exclamation mark in it? If so it means you have low brake fluid. The handbrake switch is only there to test it and as a driver reminder about the handbrake.
Normally red lights mean danger, as in "stop there is something potentially dangerous with your car".
