Exchanging details after an accident - L'escargot
At one time it was only necessary to exchange names and addresses after an accident but I understand that now the exchange of insurance details is also required. When did this change come about? It must have been relatively recently.

... necessary to exchange names and addresses after an accident ..

this is what the n.e.lincolnshire people have to say:
www.nelincs.gov.uk/transportstreets/roads/safety/H...m

After stopping, you are obliged by law to give any person affected by the accident:

Your name and address
The name and address of the owner of the vehicle
The registration number of the vehicle

the insurance bit kicks in later

i.e. at the time of the accident you're obliged to give the details listed by Dalglish..... if you don't you have been deemed to have 'failed to stop' as 'to stop' means in this context stop and exchange pars......and if for some reason you don't you have to report it to police

an interested party e.g. driver/owner of car involved, owner of damaged hedge etc is entitled to your insusrance details in a reasonable time.......but that time is not stated. There is a separate offence if you don't furnish the details (i.e separate offence to 'failing to stop').......it is right at the depths of my memory and i'm thinking a month is the timescale or guideline, but to be honest i can't remember where i've trawled that from.

The insurance bit has been around for a while...i remember looking it up at least 12 years ago, when dealing with a complaint from an insurance co.

Think you are looking for Section 154 of RTA which requires you to provide information as contained in your certificate of insurance on demand to any party making a claim against you. Failure to provide such info. without reasonable excuse is an offense.
