ignition not popping back - Vaux Omega - happyvaux
Hi all, ( Vx Omega, 2.0L 16v auto 1994 )

got a problem where when you take the ignition key out , the small grey button which the key pushes-in, doesn't pop
out it just sticks. When it happens, the key can't be put back in until it has popped out again so I'm having to
put the end of the key in then twist and pull so the grey button comes out.

Would there be any way to lube it ? I haven't yet for fear of shorting something electrically, but I can see me being
stuck at some point if I don't sort it.

Cheers,

Pete

Pete,

While you can, get an ignition barrel and key made up to match your current key. A Vauxhall dealer should be able to do this from the key number, which you should have written down i the vehicles original paperwork (we used to also write it into the back of the service book, but I don't think many other dealers did)

The reason I suggest this, is that at the moment, it is a really easy (10 minutes) job to fit a new lock barrel; if your's end up sticking completely, you will end up having to fit the whole steering lock assembly, which is a major job, both in terms of time and parts cost.

This happened to my Vectra once. A small squirt of wd40 down the outer surround of the grey plastic freed mine off. No problems since.

Not saying your'e wrong Number_Cruncher, but isn't what you're suggesting more when the actuall barrel itself gets stiff to turn, rather than just the grey plastic failing to pop out?

No problem Caveman - my advice is merely erring on the side of caution. It's a royal PITA of a job to deal with an ignition barrel that is stuck in place - even more so if the car is in an awkaward place when it fails!

Whilst you can try a lock lubricant such as TriFlow as here: www.quickuk.co.uk/acatalog/Product_Sections_subGlu...l - scroll down quite away to find it, in my experience the symptoms you are experiencing are just prior to the lock barrel seizing up. Happened to me on the morning I was due to leave to go on holiday!

If you try the lubricant, work it in & out on the the key rather than spraying it everywhere.

Many thanks for all replies , will spend a bit of careful time tomorrow with it.

I suppose a bit of gentle lubing would suffice as a 1st go, before I start ordering parts,
especially as it'd be from the dealer, but If it needs replacing then so be it.

Cheers,

There were problems with these years ago, and Vauxhall did replace them outside of normal warranty, but I think 13 years would be pushing it! :o)
