Hi,
I purchased a 1998 416i last Monday, and have a question about petrol consumption & MPG.
I filled the tank up (took about £38) last Monday when I drove out the showroom, and one week on, I've done 250 miles and the tank is empty.
Can anyone tell me if this is perfectly normal and put my mind at rest?
I think this is hell of a lot, but conpared to my last car (peugeot 106 1.1) it's probably not bad, but I still work it out to be around 26mpg.
Thanks in advance for any advice offered.

It depends on:
How long your typical journey has been on this tankful?
What kind of roads you've been using (i.e. urban, B-roads, motorway?
How much traffic or stop/start driving you've done?
How hard you drive the car?
For purely urban use and if you don't hang about, 26 mpg is probably about right. If you come back and say you're doing gentle motorway work in light traffic conditions, then you have a problem.
Cheers

That is about right for the 1.6, the 1.4 you can get 30 ish around town, contraray to what some people reckon they get

Have you taken the car out for a good long run yet? I ask because if the car has been sitting around, it will need a good blast to loosen everything up again and clear the cobwebs so to speak.
Official figures for the 416 are:
Urban - 28.5
Extra Urban - 52.1
Combined - 39.9
What your getting sounds about right and you would want to do a very accurate reading on the mpg before assuming somethings wrong. Its sounds like its fine to me having worked around the cars for years.

Check the coolant level, radiator and hoses carefully first and watch the temp guage like a hawk. Been there, got the t-shirt. Get the water pump changed when you have the cambelt done.
