Had a look over the motor today. Thought the exhaust was blowing. When the bonnet was lifted and hand revved it sounded like a a sharp intake of air ripping from up near the injectors (She is a Rover 414 16v)

Could it be a belt catching on something?Or a manifold leak?Things like this are hard to diagnose without hearing.

on hand revs it sounds like its coming from the other side of the engine than the exhaust manifold. When im in the motor i can drive normally but as soon as i ask some via the pedal its as if there is a blowy exhaust.
It doesnt seem to be affecting anything but i dont like it all the same.

inlet manifold leak on these would cause rough idle,so possibly its exhaust leak starting.
have you checked all pipes for cracks/splits

steve read you other stuff before did you work for Rover or work on them a lot?
its going in for its cam belt tmoro so i will have someone else there to help me check. I have tried to cover exhaust and listen for and hissing but didnt find anything.
Will look again and keep you posted.

No and Yes,I have owned more than a few Rovers,and still have one though it maybe on its way to scrapyard in next few months......

Found that noise btw it was the down pipe and flexi coupling rattling like a goodun on revs. Very hard to see on my own and they dont tend to rev it on the ramps at Kwik-fit!
I reckon it could do with another rubber mount around there to be honest.
