Well they've stuck the Cortina from Life on Mars on eBay for Comic Relief. It's already at £8100! And the number plate used on the show it isn't the real one - the car is newer than the programme which is set in 1973. You do get the real N-reg plate (RUO 568N) which when looked up is on a Cortina of this colour etc. with 8 previous owners.

It's here: tinyurl.com/24a7p8

I wonder if they modified the front suspension to make it bounce every time it stops - or did Mk3 Cortinas all do that?

Lot of money for a slightly tired MKIII.

Then again, it's the only one that's had DCI Hunt slamming the nonce's head in the door!! :-)

The car should be in a museum, next to the original Sweeney Consul, Doyle's MKII escort RS2000 and Bodie's Capri 2.0S. It'd be the musem of great cops show Fords. I'd visit it!! You could even go transatlantic and have Starsky's red Gran Torino.

Sorry, I've run out of cop show Fords now... :-(

They all did that - I owned a K reg 2000GXL. I put Koni dampers on it which helped a bit.

Interesting that the one on the show is really a 2000E with a GXL front - I was always puzzled by its cloth interior, mine had black plastic seats, lovely in hot weather!

The worst Cortina, wasn't it? Didn't go very well and rusted badly in weird places. Felt enormous to drive, part of the definition of a bad car.

£8,000+ ... woof woof!

Best looking one though wasn't it? You will probably disagree but I have my nostalgia head on - my dad had two of them when I was a nipper in the '70's. ;o)

I saw a letter a month or two ago in Practical Classics or one of the similar mags, which amused me. It started with, "My Cortina handles like a double bed, what can I do to improve it?"

Eye of the beholder must rule here. Never liked the Coke-bottle flanks look all that much myself. Actually the Mk 1, especially in Lotus Cortina form, was the best looking to me. Good car too, simple and light.

But big-looking, big-feeling cars appeal to some people (and most Americans). Matter of taste.

I had two Mk 3 Cortinas, the worst problem I (and a colleague who had one) suffered was the issue of the gear lever coming off in one's hand because it was only retained by a threaded nylon bush; with age and mileage these became insecure, making quick changes risky.

Its actauly really rather tatty., The interior is a tip.

I'm just a little suspicious of this.
It all looks very authentic, but why would this ebay account have been used to buy an eBook entitled 'Ultimate eBay Auction Secrets & Resources Guide'?

Has to be the most talked about car in the UK at the moment, except for the wrecked mollusc perhaps. I liked the Mk3s, of it's time though, Where's the 8 track? Or were cassettes available by 1973? I can't remember. Vinyl seats yuck, yuck and yuck. Cloth ones weren't much better.
