Any ideas guys - still haven't made my mind up on my new car.....Have been through so many options and have now narrowed it down to either the Yaris or Colt

I bought a 5 door CZ1 (1.1) in January and have been very happy with it. The base model spec. is very good and it offers excellent value for money when compared with a similar Yaris or Jazz.

I bought it to replace my 04 Renault Megane which was just dreadful and had no end of problems, so I was looking for something a lot more reliable and simpler and I've had no cause for complaints.

Have just started looking for a new small car for the wife. She has had her present one from new in 1993 and she has started to think of a replacement.
Have gone through the range the same as yourself but keep changing my mind whenever I look at the next one. The old saying of ?I used to be decisive but now I?m not so sure?.
Have been to a main combined Suzuki Swift/Skoda dealer and was impressed with the Swift. Very nicely finished and looked good.
In the same showroom was the Fabia. I got an impression of solidness and this was the first thing the sales lad said when he came over. He said the Swift is great but that the Fabia does feel very solid on the road and did indeed look more robust. A new model out in May by the way.
Yesterday I went round Hilton car supermarket and it was useful that they leave all the car doors open so you can sit in one and then another immediately, which gives you an instant impression.
There was a Colt in there and the wife thought it was great. However the downside to me was the front pillar and a kind of fixed quarterlight. This seemed obtrusive in looking through the windscreen. However I expect one gets used to it. Very well put together and really stylish.
Moved on to a huge row of Fiestas and Corsas. The Corsa pedals seemed to be out of alignment with the sitting position but otherwise a lovely interior.
Next was the Fiesta which would suit me in the matter of having so many people who can fix them but they do seem to be more flimsy inside although this is only an impression more than fact.
Honda Jazz was excellent inside as you would expect from Honda but a little pricey.
Would imagine servicing expensive with those two spark plugs per cylinder and reading comments on site.
Will be interested to hear others comments and would also ask the question of where do these huge rows of Corsas for example all with relatively low mileage come from.
They all seem unmarked and immaculate for hire cars etc.
The wifes main input was that she likes the red ones.

Had a loan one. Quite a nice little car except for one thing - the automatic gearbox was so bad that it was almost dangerous. The gearchanges took soooo long that if you needed a burst of speed for any reason it took seconds before anything happened. Very very disconcerting.

New Fabia due in a few months so there should be some good clearnce deals on the ones in the garages just now - ther is % interest but that should just be the start of the offers which should get better as the new model Fabia gets nearer.

We (one of my daughters) just bought a Colt CZ1 with a/c for £7500. We also have a Jazz and the comparison with that is interesting as the 5 door Colt looks remarkably like the Jazz. You do have to be aware of the thickness of the A posts (at the side of the windscreen) but we've got used to it on the Jazz so Colt no problem.

I think it stands up very well against the Jazz, especially bearing in mind that it's a lot cheaper. The ride is definitely better too and I reckon the seats are a bit more comfortable.

We looked at Yaris too, but to get a/c (which we thought essential) you've got to buy a T3. The Zinc special edition, based on the T3, is a better buy at the moment but you're still in £10K territory.

Its a good car, get one but buy a 5dr. Just need to get the rattles out of the daskboard and doors on my CZ1 and it would be perfect.

Go for the Yaris, its a nicer car and will depreciate less, Colts are heavily discounted due to over production in Europe. They are not bad cars just dont pay a lot for one. The Yaris will be more expensive but youll get it back on resale.

I have a Carisma, but have had a new Colt as a courtesy car on occasions. Nice to drive, but tiny, tiny boot space. My Mitsubishi has been very reliable but they do depreciate badly. The dealer I use is doing the base Colt for £6k which I think is very good value.

Hello All,

I had a test drive in a Colt 1.3 and found it to be one of the very few small cars that both the wife and I could drive comfortably. I am very tall and the wife is rather short.

Another fact to consider: the salesman told me that the 1.5 diesel engine was a Merc unit and was not common rail. It was direct injection, turbo-charged. This would weigh heavily in its favour with me as report of expensive cr problems abound on the Web.

Nice to drive, but tiny, tiny boot space.

The rear seat slides so maybe it was right back when you saw it. In its normal position, and without measuring it, I'd say the boot on the 5 door is pretty similar to the Jazz.
The dealer I use is doing the base Colt for £6k which I think is very good value.

That's the key - don't pay too much for it in the first place. It might look bad in % terms but there's less pound notes to lose if the purchase price is low.

Thanks guys for all your advice. I'm getting the feeling that the Yaris is probably a better buy as the depreciation levels are much better. I'm also thinking that the build quality is perhaps better too....

If you decide on a Yaris, go for the 1.3 if you can - it's very lively whereas the 1.0 is sluggish. Elder daughter is on her second 1,3 Yaris and has loved both.

I had a Colt 1.1 loan car which was very lively if noisy (but a pleasant noise, unlike a certain German taxi of my acquaintance) - much cheaper than the Yaris but it depends how you're buying it. A PCP for a Colt might not be all that much less as the Yaris as you say holds its value better.

Try both - see if you like both - and then do the sums. Let us know how you get on!

The dealer I got mine has them on their wesite at £5999, and I recall that they certainly had them at the dealership with a/c (£595 option) for £6something

offers.grensonmotor.co.uk.40x40.com/index.cgi?acti...r

As mentioned earlier, we bought a 5dr CZ1 with optional a/c (in solid red) off them for £7500, so that's £1100 or so less than list.

Interesting site Bill..I see they give huge discount for three door and none for five at present.
I suppose its about supply and demand at any given time.

The sales director told me that he'd done a deal to put quite a few 3dr cars into stock and had got them at a special price.

All Colts are reduced by £495 supported by Mitsubishi until 31st March, and, in addition, we basically got a/c free on our 5dr which was a £595 option.
MItsubishi Colt - what do you think? - Bill Payer
I meant to add the 5dr price on Grenson's website shows the 'list' price, without the £495 Mitsubishi discount, so the car really only lists at £7500.

Until very recently they were still showing last years offers.

My wife and her daughter both have 3 door colts in dk grey metalic with alloys, They look much nicer and more sporty than the Yaris. You don't see so many on the road as the Yaris. Apart from them being a really good car, there is the rarity value too.

I have the base 3 door model. Engine rough but smoothes out on a run. Long hauls quite relaxing. Very flexible and lively in third gear. Poor rear view. Boot small for the size of the car. Driver legroom reduced if rear seats fully down. Quality control inferior to my two previous Colts. Top of gear lever came off. Service manager said easy to stick back on. I told him I thought, after a similar problem with my 1997-reg MGTf, that the whole lever would have to be replaced, thus gear box to be opened up. I was right. Whole dash had to come out to find what sounded like a large ball bearing rolling about. It turned out to be a stray bolt, left in a concealed gap under the front passenger seat. Dealer slip-up meant I got free front parking sensors (very loud) and free body stripes. 3 years free servicing - but I have found in the past that a squabble develops between sales and service when actually claiming this, so get documentation if it is on offer. Good deal overall. Looked at a Jazz but the salesman couldn't be bothered to demonstrate the seats. Thought the ride of the Yaris would be too choppy on a long run.

Wemyss - sorry, only just checked this site today. My local dealer is Gallaghers Mitsubishi at Ashley, near Altrincham, Cheshire. They were advertising new 3 door Colts 'from £6k' in the Sale and Altrincham Messenger a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if a link to their web site is allowed, but there is a 2007 1.1 CZ1 in red in their 'used' section for £5,998 with delivery miles (though the advert did say new). Hope this helps. Personally, although they sound good value I think I would prefer to buy a larger used car and save on depreciation.
