If the sump goes over studs coming out of the block and you hold it on with nuts I would stick it to the block over the studs. If it is held on with bolts going into tapped holes in the block then I would stick it to the sump with a couple of bolts "wedged" into place to locate it.

In my opinion a smear of grease is fine to help seal it.

Get all the bolts/nuts done up finger tight and then tighten them up from the middle of the block towards each end.(as cylinderhead bolts)

If its a CVH engine then you are much better off with a genuine Ford gasket than a pattern one. They are very prone to leaking once fitted and not having the genuine article seems to make the problem worse - ie it is more likely to leak.

Its more a amtter of making sure the seals at the ends of the crank are in place properly rather than the make of gasket thats important.

As above, use grease to stick it to block and then put sump to it; but make sure those seals stay in place. You may need to do it a couple of times before being happy that seals are in place properly.

Its a much easier job on the bench than under the car but it can be done. Loads of patience!

If you get the time; buy four pieces of studding [3" or so] of the appropriate thread [M6x1.0 from memory - check that] and saw a cross slot in the ends.

Spin them into four likely holes and they'll hold everything in alignment until you get some bolts started.

Then undo them with a screwdriver and fit the last bolts.
