The videotape also shows a man in a Superman costume walking around the car, but he did not stop to help the driver or any of the victims. His identity is unknown.

Yup, only in America........................
... would Superman himself refrain from preventing an accident or helping victims because no one had suitable insurance or proof of ability to pay....

Yup, only in America........................
Because of course we don't have any elderly morons driving on the roads in Britain do we ?

Quite so.
What we have are loads of young cretins driving on the roads in Britain.
Don't we?

Not quite wall to wall, but we've got a goodly number of 'Pratts R Us'.
Rhubarb and Custard driving & behavious isn't just on the Western Side of the Atlantic, there are plenty over here as well.

you really must reconsider this comment about older drivers. I agree that there are far too many old drivers out there who cause problems but you musnt tar them all with the same brush. I have been driving for 55 years -never had an accident and thats not because I cant keep up with the rest of you.3 points on my licence 4 years ago for doing 41 in 30 speed limit. In my job as a plate driver I drive most cars on the market and have don for 15 years since retirement. I have seen most causes of accidents over the years -mostly caused by younger drivers who seem unable to anticipate what another driver will do-you learn this from experience. Ther are 20 others doing the same jobe with ages ranging for 60 to 78 -yes 78. The have never had an accident and they dont hang about!! Tell a lie -ther have benn 2 accidents caused when they were stationary. one on the m25 when they were in a traffic jam and were rear ended by much younger drivers and once on a motorway slip road when again they were rear ended. Hospital treatment required in both cases. On the M4 last week in torrential rain, dark and with lots of spray from lorries the number of mercedes, Audies and BMW who were doing 80 plus in the outside lane using nothing but sidelights!!You shouldnt judge a book by its cover. By the way I will be 74 next month and wear a baseball cap. I would rather be apassenger in a car driven by one of them than a lot of younger drivers.

SHUDDER
I'm sure you drive impeccably but may I wear a blindfold please?

On the subject of only in America, I have just returned from the US where I spent a week in Washington (Virginia State).
I have to say that my observations are that generally they are a much more tolerant nation of drivers than I experience here in the UK.
Everyone seems to be more patient, polite and helpful.
Generally they also seem to obey traffic signals better as well, no-one jumps red lights etc that I see going on here daily.
Their approach to pedestrians is also much better. They give way to them and seem very patient toward them.
I found the whole approach much less stressful than driving here - even in rush hour etc.
|
I meant to add that one big problem I noticed was that clearly it is not illegal to use a mobile phone whilst driving in the US but on a +ve note I did not spot any speed cameras.
|
Yes, but the police carry tasers and big guns.

>>Yes, but the police carry tasers and big guns.<<
I'm not sure what your point is - I am not suggesting that I much prefer having aggressive drivers and police men without guns - it was just a general observation.
Most police forces in europe carry guns - alot more of our police carry guns - all cities have armed response units etc. Still I suppose when ALL our police carry guns we will all become much more tolerant drivers if I follow your logic ??????????

Let me add a caution and a correction here - driver and vehicle licensing and laws are at State level in the US (Provincial in Canada), and not Federal. Therefore you can't generalise that anything is legal (or illegal!) in the States, because it depends on which state. Mobile phone use while driving is in fact illegal in New York state, possibly California too, and a smattering of others. True, it's still legal across quite a lot of the US, but I'd hate anyone to get arrested and charged because he read a slightly inaccurate letter.

''Hands Free'' Cell Phone Bill (California) takes effect from July 2008. Signed off by the Governor in Sept 2006 I think. Will be interesting to see if as many people ignore it as they do in the UK. I notice that already many business people are using 'hands free' ear pieces. Unfortunately, the school run brigade still appear to have their phones glued to their ears. Personally, i switch mine off, or leave it for my co-driver to answer.
|
I had heard the penalty (in California) is planned to be $20 (About £10) so that'll obviously have a big effect...

Thanks for that snippet - I did not realise that.

Crikey.. a $20 dollar fine. That would be a couple of decent Mexican meals you would have to forgo. >>

However if any of you decide to get a job as a school bus driver in the USA, you will find it is against the law to use a cell phone whist driving in many sSates- cos its dangerous!!
It does seem strange that the authorities acknowledge the dangers, but do nothing about it.
Actually Florida did vote to ban cell phone use(cities to make their own ruling) but the Governor - brother of GW - vetoed the legislation.
This link show the countries that ban Cell phone and States in the USA
