After just 30 miles of cleaning it out the oil filler breather pipe has become blocked again. Its 1.1 HCS engine.
I have replaced the oil cap but not drive it since, I am hoping this would solve the problem. What causes the oil to go in the breather pipe anwyay?
I am a bit stumpted.

You have worn bores an dpiston rings. When the engien warms up, combustion gasses flow down the cylinder walls past the psitons and into the crankcase. .. which is then pressurised and the gases flow out .. and the only exit is the breather.
The crankcase is full of oil and oil mist from lubricating the engine. So oil mist goes out the breather and gets trapped in the oil trap.
It's clapped out...

It seems a shame, the car is fine, but the fact there is a little bit of rust which could become structurial in the next two years is enough to want to make me sell it now. I've lost a fortune on this car as it is, but I have learnt lot about cars too.
You learn the hard way. I am going to have a mass ebay clearout, raise money to buy a new car within the next month, keep both at the same time and sell my Fiesta. Should be able to get £250-£300 for it.

i had a escort with the same type of engine, that was always full of sludge in the rocker...i think theyre prone to it
id advise you to whip the rocker cover and breather pipes off and and clean them with a degreaser like gunk and a garden hose, then do a oil change with decent quality oil...its no biggie to have the cover off and clean it out now and then , no amount of driving seems to shift it once its built up
it wont help things if you always do short runs...try and go on a decent run every now and then
one other thought...does the engine get warm in good time? thermostat could be stuck open making it run cool...the heat helps burn of the condensation
|
Thanks :) Removing the rocker is something I have meaning to do for a while but I have been too scared, the air filter unit is int he way, and I can't remove it because I can't seem to remove anotehr breather which is attached to it.
Regarding the thermostat, it takes about 1-3 miles before it gets to about a quarter. It dosn't seem to rise much about this even in traffic. When the pipe was completly blocked the guage was always in the middle, its dropped quite a bit since then.

get yourself a haynes manual or find a friendly neibour/mate that can help....its a simple diy task to remove the air cleaner and rocker cover(get a new gasket)
if you havent removed the other breather how do you know that isnt blocked

Start the engine from cold-heater off-and keep your hand on the top radiator hose-it should not get hot until the thermostat opens-that'll be several minutes later. If it starts to warm up straightaway, you have a failed/leaking stat.It is a 5-min. job to change the stat on this engine-88 deg. is the correct spec tho' a few were fitted with 92.(scandinavian markets). My 1.1 Fiesta was still running well when I sold it with 155,000 on the clock but then my journey to work was 19 miles.
|
Thermostat still seems fine. I have checked the gung since I replaced the cap and its all clear now, there is also no sludge on the valves, its all nice and smooth, and the car has plenty of oil in it :).
So it looks like using the car a lot instead of just 1-2 miles a day and cleaning it out has cured the problem. Still need to get that rocker cover removed whwen I get the guts.
Next week I plan to do an oil change to see if it cures the other issue "smoking when engine is hot".
Thanks people, through the help of this site I am starting to get my Fiesta running like it should and its costing me virtualy nothing.

When you do get round to taking the rockerbox off, rattle, invest in a new gasket. Won't cost much.
These gaskets distort, stick and break up, especially the cork ones but even the plastic ones.
When you put it back, tighten the bolts or nuts evenly and not too tight. Haynes will give you the correct torque if you're a stickler, but the essential thing is not to distort the box by overtightening one or other of the screws. Common sense really.

My sister's old car did that and changed the engine oil for Semi-Synthetic, the problem never came back.
Mineral oil when hot, they go everywhere and make a mess, I'd stay clear of using them.
|
Thanks. Another 20 miles today and the top end still looks nice and clean.
The car is noisy as hell but its an old Fiesta they all are :p:
|
No they are not only knackered ones are noisy.
|
I've yet to hear a sinlge HCS engine with more than 50k on the clock thats not noisy, and they will still happily do another 60-70k. The vales and tappets most likely just need adjusting on them, not a major job. Mine just as an extra rattle from the camshaft, but if I decide to keep the car a £20 cylinder head off ebay will eventualy solve that problem depending on the labour cost.
|
I would not bother with a sh head: too much work and it will be knackered likely as not.
As long as it runs and you get 30mpg or more and it uses less than 1 litre oil per 1,000 miles, it's probably good for another 30,000 miles.. at least...
Bangeromics is the art of spending little consistent with essential maintenance and not doing unneccessay work.. imo.
I speak as the maintainer of a 1993 Fiesta (son's), 1998 106 (other son's) and 106 diesel (SWMBO's ... near immaculate 14 years old)...

how will a cylinder head off Ebay stop a noise from the camshaft on an OHV engine?
I think you need to read your Haynes manual.

my fiesta has done 122000 its a 89 plate, sailed thru mot , no smoke ,slight rattle, but i change the oil every 6k(gtx high mileage) and i keep an eye on the mayo as in clean breather pipes and gap the plugs , thats all it needs a bit of basic service and the car looks after itself
