I had one as a courtesy car for a couple of days (Picasso, 110 bhp). I was impressed with the power, refinement and torque. As far as refinement went, I found myself wondering if it really was a diesel, despite the fact that I had been told that it was when handed the keys.
However, my experience was brief, and I'm sure what AS has to say will be more useful. (Perhaps AS could tell all of us about his experience?)

As - thanks for that, post your thoughts here for the benefit of others as well as me.
Its the 110 version I figure 90 is at least 15 short of a power unit! , I am looking at the 307SW, but also interested where fitted in Cits (C4) and in the 406. what version i scurrently fitted in the Picasso? (old one not C4 version)
Is the same unit as used by ford?

Engines apart, hasn't the 307 gained quite a reputation for electrical failures and self-immolation?
A work colleague runs a 1.6 diesel old-shape Picasso (not sure whether its 90 or 110bhp). He's pleased with the economy and acceleration, although he's remarked there's a short but noticeable lag before the turbo kicks in when pulling out of side roads into fast-moving traffic.

OK. I have had a 110 Hdi since June 2004. Mechanically it has been trouble free. I don't drive hard and usually one up, sometime 2 plus weekend luggage. I can't get under 50 mpg however I drive although I do no crawling thru town or city traffic. Typical driving gives between 53 and 55 mpg although I note that it varies with the time of year. I get better consumption in the Summer, by about 3 mpg. A full tank is 650 miles in the winter and 700 in the Summer. Gearing is good, one has to change down for hills on minor roads but no problem on motorways. 5th Gear gives 30mph per 1000rpm and it is only obviously a diesel when idling, very smooth and quiet when cruising. The particle filter is a financial worry at £700 a shot new and included in the 48k Mile servicing. However, they can be 'regenerated' at no cost during servicing and if that doesn't work they can now be exchanged at £150. It still seems an expensive way of getting one's road tax down to £110 a year!

I had a brief drive in a 110 version of the 307 and was bowled over by how smooth and quiet it was. I'm no fan of the 307 personally, but the engine was very impressive. Probably the most refined four cylinder diesel I've ever come across, and certainly much quieter than the bigger 2.0 unit.
Didn't squeeze you into the seat on a light throttle like a VAG TDI, but felt very "petrol like" and I mean that as a complement. A lovely linear throttle response, extremely smooth, very quiet and very responsive. Built speed deceptively (like I said, you don't get the VW PD shove in the back, but the speedo figures tell you it's no slouch.
Is the same unit as used by ford?
Yes, in the mk2 Focus 1.6 TDCi
Overall I thought it was a superb engine.
Cheers

Will it soon be Pugman (ex TVM, ex RF) then, TVM, ex RF?

I had a 307 SW for 3 days whilst my car was in the garage. It was extremely quiet and at idle I couldn;t really tell it was diesel. I can't tell you if it was the 90 or 100 I had but I can tell you it averaged over 62MPG (Brim to Brim, not computer) over 600 miles. Mostly motorway at 70MPH.
I was quiet impressed by the 307, particulaly the panormaic roof!!!! Only isue for me was it had a very small peddle box, OK on motorway but a pain around town.

In june it will be
Pugman (ex TVM ex RF)
or
Ambiente (ex TVM ex RF)
or
6TS2 (ex TVM ex RF)
or
C4Robot (ex TVM ex RF)
but defintely not
Mondeo TDCI is the answer for everything man (ex TVM ex RF)

I test drove the C4 with this engine (with EGS 'box) for a whole day and found it very smooth, certainly much smoother than the Golf, although not as quick as the Golf TDI 170, obviously! Petrol-like in its responses, and didn't seem to bog down at low revs as some diesels can. Quicker than I was expecting, and it felt quicker than the HDI 2.0 I had in a Picasso a few years ago, but maybe the higher seat position in the Pic' made it feel slower than iot was.
I liked it so much that I am collecting my shiny new C4 coupe some time next week! Wil let you know how I get on in due course.

Had a go around town in a manual 5-door C4 with the 110 engine and loved it, silent and rapid.

Will the Touran be going back, or will it have to catch a bus home?
o):
Putting coat on now.

You haven't had a misfortune again have you?

Had a 1.6 HDI 90 BHP 207 loan car for a day, gutless is the word to best describe the engine.
|
In its defence, the 207 weighs the same as a small country. ;-)
|
In its defence the 207 was also the worse PSA car ive ever driven ;-)
106, AX, Saxo, 205, 305, 306, 405, 406, 206 , Xantia all drove much better.

I had the C4 VTR+ with the 1.6 110bhp. I have to say it was a very sweet engine. Bags of pull, quite refined and didn't cause an ounce of trouble. Motorway cruising in france with 2 adults and heaps of luggage caused no probs at all. If I had not had my mid-life crisis I'd still be driving it now!

i have posted here on my experience of 1500 miles in a C-Max with this engine, a 110, fine engine and performs well in a largish car though has a very slight harsh edge on and off the throttle, reckon the mechanically older though fuel system/electronics contemporary Ford 1.8 is slightly more refined and punchier and the 1.6 certainly does not have the wafting along refinement of my Mondeo at m/way speeds. Should feel sweet as a nut after a 1.9 PD though, particularly at idle, if not as torquey.
